'96 850 - Odometer Stopped Working?

Post by coodoo99 »

I have about 111K on this non-turbo ride. The Odometer(master + trip) stopped working about 3-weeks ago. The speedometer is still working fine.

Thanks and Please advise.

Cheers, Peter

Happens to every 850.

Here's how to remove the cluster and repair the odometer gear.

I think it happens to people that reset the trip a lot sooner than later. I spoke to a guy that had over 325,000 on his 850 and the odometer was still working. I think he used his trip computer.

Agreed! Specially for drivers who tend to reset while the car is in motion.
I happened to have replaced that small gear twice. I instinctively reset the odo while I was travelling over 50miles with the newly installed gear.
I could hear one the of the teeth break. Found out the broken gear tooth was well jammed into the other piece.

coodoo99, if the excllent photo tutorial to which jblackburn posted a link seems rather complicated, just consider the dealership will want upwards of $600 to replace the whole instrument cluster and the offending gear is available for about $25 (this was back when I did mine 9 years ago). This is a half day's concentrated work to save $$$.

Once again reminding us that at the dealer, they are only "parts changers." Mechanics fix things  .

Thanks all - I'll make the fix myself following that tutorial and order the parts from IPD. I'll take my time and follow that tutorial closely. Cheers, PR

Read all of the comments posted with the tutorial as well, particularly if you have a turbo. There are a couple of "Got Ya's" that aren't really covered in the tutorial which was for a non turbo car.

I'm about to change the cluster in my car so let me know if you have any questions. I will swap the odo in the clusters so I'll do just about everything. I would also suggest checking the bulbs in the cluster before you pull it. And please remove the dash pad. The dash pad and dash are both to old and brittle to be pushing and bending them around, trying to squeeze the clsuter out.

Replaced the odometer gear on 1 non turbo and 1 turbo 850 so far and could have not done it without this site. Thanks

I just did the turbo model last week and my new problem is that the odometer is now turning too fast! it is going 60% faster than the digital odometer, The digital trip odometer is correct. Im stumped. I guess i will order another gear and try again. Any thing else to check?
Maybe odometer is trying to cach up after not working for a year! :)

It sounds like it is registering kilometers instead of miles. There is a code that can be set to correct it but you will need to build a code flash box or have a shop with a Volvo scan tool do it for you.
