1st Volvo - 97 850 GLT

Post by combatkarl »

Hello,
My first Volvo experience is a well used 97 850 w/ 180,000+ miles w/ broken odometer. It was $1,000 and the intended purpose is an inexpensive/safe car for the teenagers to drive. This site is full of great information. This is my first non-Honda/Mazda vehicle but so far I like it.
Service completed: oil/filter change; cabin filter; air filter
My to do list includes:
Replace top engine mount
Replace PCV system, plugs, cap/rotor
CEL w/ P0116 by AutoZone - coolant temp sensor - ordering from FCPGroton
Replace radiator hoses & coolant flush
Fix odometer
Seat covers - leather skins seem too expensive
Transmission flush or drain & fill

Should I replace the heater hoses while doing the antifreeze & radiator hoses? Also, the prev. owner did tell me the starter did not work intermittently. It was diagnosed by an independent Volvo shop (who did all the maintenance) after having the car at the shop for a week before he could recreate the starter failure. The starter hasn't failed me yet. Should I just replace the starter when doing the PVC system?

Thanks
Karl

Welcome sir, and congrats on your purchase. Looks like you've already done a good bit of research around the site here.

I would definitely recommend replacing the heater core hoses, as well as doing the turbo coolant feed hoses. I have had both blow up on me (and then again on my younger brother).

Having the intake manifold out will give you excellent access to the starter, but it really depends on your budget I suppose. If you have the funds for it, go for it.

Welcome to the site. Excellent choice for a first Volvo I must say :D . But a word of caution: the 97' GLT IS a very quick car because of that little turbo in there. Please teach your teenagers to very careful with it.

As far as which parts to replace, you are on the right track. You've come to the right place to ask questions, this site is simply awesome for getting help and finding all sorts of information about your car. Have fun with it!
