760 (1990) Repair Manuals for Climate Unit

Post by dieterdanger »

Hello dear board members,
I have a problem with my Volvo 760 (1990, D24TIC, L.H.D.) car. In particular my climate unit including fans is not working anymore. Does anybody here have any repair manuals that could help me in finding the problem? I suspect the climate control unit to be defect.

Thank you for your help!

Best regards
Dennis

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Diagnostic code 2-3-3 on the EEC relates to the fan start current being too high. The fan motor is either seized or very sluggish.

Access to the fan motor on the 7 series is fairly easy. Remove the panel beneath the glove compartment. You should now be able to see the fan motor housing. Remove three screws and the electrical connector and withdraw the motor. The last one of these I looked at the motor shaft bearings were dry. Sometimes the bearings can be lubricated. 3 in 1 oil or similar can be used but nowadays I prefer one of the silicone based oils. Some of the bearings are sealed which makes lubrication difficult. However, It is quite easy to dismantle the motor by bending the tabs holding it together. If you do have to dismantle the motor it may pay to clean the armature. Mount the motor in the chuck of a drill and, on a slow speed, polish it with a fine grade glass paper. Don't use emery paper which is conductive. On re-assembly ensure the brushes are held back whilst the armature is put in place. This is easily done using pieces of wire.

If the motor is completely seized when you remove it I am afraid you are looking for a replacement.
