really love the Volvo's....BUT

Post by Cojack »

hey all, first I would like to thank each and everyone one of you who make this site so wonderful. THANK YOU!

back in Nov 11 I bought a 95 850 GLT and drove the crap out of it without many problems at all then in Dec of 12 things started going bad, nothing that can not be fixed, its just all the front suspension that is bad.
So I thought I would just park it and save the pennies to fix it and find another one for now, so I bought a 98 xc V70 with 180,000 well maintained at dealers for 2,400.00. Let me tell you this is the most beautiful red scratch less car, and the interior is perfect.
well that is all it is! since I got it three weeks ago I have had to.
1. took the rear drive shaft off due to the vibration it throws out. ( front wheel drive is fine with me)
2. all the radio light bulbs (SC-816) including soldering the one for the LCD (nice having the lights work as I drive at night )
3. rear license plate light bulbs
4. front fog light bulbs
5 brand new radiator from FCP
6. oil cooler line and trans line O rings with clamps, (which have the "screw" hose clamps over them to prevent them from coming off)
7. PCV full system from FCP, then still had the smoking dipstick so I changed the 3/8 hose to a 5/8 hose.
So yesterday I get a day early birthday present from my car.. oil all over the top of the motor and under the hood, I figure out it is coming from the dipstick, so I read here for hours and find where someone had put an extra O ring on the dipstick tube (which I did) so I took it off, and NO it did not help it one bit. So I read some more and finally it dawns on me I have the two smaller lines going to the PTC hooked up wrong, so I switch them and figure while I am here I will put a O ring on the dipstick itself to get a little better seal..test drove it and presto I now am leaking oil out my RMS I am thinking. But when I take the dipstick out I leak NO oil what so ever, frustration got to me so I took the left over 5/8 hose from the PCV mod and put it over the dipstick tube and ran it to a empty oil quart jug i placed in front of the battery. Well to say the least it works and no more leaking oil any where and i drove 300 miles and no oil in the catch jug either.. I am very puzzled by this but it is working, I am thinking rings or something but I do not burn oil out the exhaust at all., any ideas or thoughts? guess now that it as so many miles I will wait till the motor blows and put a NEW one in instead of replacing all the seals and such.

I can tell you this, I do like working on them and can do just about anything. Love my Volvo's! thanks for taking the time to read my story.

So I was impatient on a reply and took the day off from work and tore the intake back off.. 30 minutes top this time (3rd time doing it) and found the 5/8 hose mod on the PCV is kinked as it comes out of the oil trap. thinking I may have found my pressure issue

For those of you that want to know the out come, it was the 5/8 hose mod so I ran it up through the intake manifold like the top hose and over to the PTC NO more smoking dipstick and no more oil blowing out!

When you did the pcv system did you thoroughly clean out that lowest hole in the block(i believe the "oil sump") where the oil trap attaches to? My car was blowing oil out the dipstick tube as well, and the only seriously clogged passage or tube i found was the one i just described.

Yes, for sure I did. As stated I found what was causing the pressure it was the 5/8 hose mod it can kinked right as it came up from the oil trap, I fixed this and have had NO oil whats so ever dripping from anywhere.

Oops idk how i missed that right above my post, lol. Glad it worked out, i was very skeptical when i saw oil on top of my spark plug cover and the cream of mushroom soup in the dipstick tube. Such a relief getting it to stop! My mpg went up significantly after doing the pcv as well :D

I'm glad your RMS stopped leaking. That would really suck if it had not.
