2000 Volvo XC V70 car starts most of the time, ETM?
Alright I'm so confused what to do to fix this issue. Background...2000 Volvo XC V70 car starts most of the time great but occasionally it starts and can only go to 2500 rpm's. Try again 10 minutes later it's fine. I've been told it's the ETM...What best and cheapest way to fix? I've heard of Modulemaster($230), Xepodex(sp?) to have reprogramed. I found a place in green bay that if I find a used one they will reprogram from one to the other for $150? Is that my best route? And where can I find a used one? Any help is much appreciated!

True JRL but some used ones do need reprogramming when they've been in a different vehicle with a different software version.
It's actually not clear cut in which cases you'll need a reload of ETM software when using used ETMs. It is true that software has nothing to do with how YOUR ORIGINAL ETM behaves in your own vehicle. All the rebuilders may update software but they may not use VOLVO software. Two such examples are: Autologic Scanners & Autoland Scientech Vedis II s/w which can initialise a new or used ETM.
Last week a customer in NSW (near Sydney) tried a used ETM in his '99 non turbo V70 and it didn't work, even after succesive clearing of the codes.
He sent it to me and to this day I've been driving around with it happily running for 5 days now in my 2000 NA V70.
His software version on his old ETM was old (and mated to ECU programming) and my car's is recent (post 2006)

I suppose anything with a Volvo is possible but ALL ETMs worldwide should have been updated with the 2006 recall and now 6-7 years later...

We haven't got the dealer servicing culture here in Australia with wide open areas and hours of travel to dealers, let alone their double rate labour fees. All Volvo owners I know stay with the dealer for about 2 years and after that they go indie. All the indies I know don't have Vida licensing and can't update anything or add options.
I spoke to an XC90 owner the other day and he has a diesel 2006. He just discovered he needs a yaw sensor, steering angle sensor and rear diff sensor to get rid of some DTSC and other codes. He's using an indie and he WON"T spend $175/hr at our local dealer network (Stillwell Motor Group) I can't say I blame him...

Our warranty is longer (4 years), some do, some don't.
It depends on where you live in relation to a dealer. Since VIDA is really needed on anything after 2001, many just stick with their dealer (if they're decent and again, depending on location).

Warranty is the same here, but you don't have to have routine servicing done at the dealer to maintain the warranty; the Oz govt. made some changes to protect the consumer.
We have at least 6 independant Volvo repairers in the suburbs; some are only decent and some are awful but NONE have access to Vida licensing. They all send their customers to the dealers for updates. ETMs here are not as affected in the southern regions. Up north, Queensland, Goldcoast etc and northern NSW there's a lot of moisture and the contacts on the sensors I repair on the ETMs are almost always corroded from these regions.
I'd imagine there would be a lower ETM failure rate in warm places like Florida as it's not always the contacting/sweeping films that cause the problems (many of the ETMs I repair have perfect unworn films) but the inherent design of how the films are connected to the board cause many problems

Ok, so I was able to talk to my father in law who gave us the car and he said the first the auto place did was replace the MAF sensor and its still happening. So that leads me to believe it's the ETM, correct? What should I be doing...I've heard of the Xemodex(Sp?), I found some service on Ebay that cleans them for 230 bucks, find a used one in a salvage yard? You can clean it yourself, it takes a few minutes
$230???!!!
You probably need a new ETM so it's your choice.
You can try Module Master, they're new at this but they're a decent company.
You can go with XeMODex
or a new Volvo ETM
