XC70 2009, Brake rotors
XC70 2009. Just been informed by mechanic that rear brakes are so worn that the rotors need replacing. Car has only travelled 42000 klm. Has anybody heard of this before or am i being taken. Car went in for a minor service without any brakes issues what so ever. Thank you, J

Wrong forum but I've had (Volvo AWD) rear rotors go bad as early as 10,000 miles!
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Yes,
But to be objective, you can ask the mechanic to provide you with the actual thickness that he measured on your rotors as well as the criteria (minimum serviceable thickness) that he used to assess their condition. Numbers do not lie.

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I suggest you inspect the parts yourself. The pads on the rear should last longer under normal use. Just replacing the pads and rotor should reproduce the exact same problem. The issue is to locate the reasoning behind why this is occurring.
Is the caliper stuck, is the brake fluid old? Is a brake fluid line close to a heat source (exhaust) ?
