Re: Your Battery Brand and Price

Post by dahammer »

I have two 1998 S70's, normally aspirated. Just bought a new battery at Sam's Club, it was a Duracell made by East Penn Mfg. who licensed the brand from Proctor and Gamble. $89 plus tax including old battery. Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Sears, and Pep Boys were all in the $130 zone.

Sometimes there is a big difference in battery capacity . Chances are the more expensive ones had more .

Consumer Reports reviewed car batteries in the Nov, 2012 issue. For group 48 the top 2
are Diehard Gold 50648 (the one I have), and Interstate Mega-Tron Plus MTP48/H6.
[/quote]

I replaced my Sears Diehard with a new one yesterday. I ordered online from sears.com and
paid $123+tax for the 50648. Had I purchased in store it would have been 144. Got a credit
of 14 for the old Diehard battery. It had 10 months left on the 100 month warranty.

So my net cost was $109, the same as I paid for a new Diehard in 2005.

For those not familiar with sears.com, you can save quite a bit by ordering online with
free store pickup. And always use a coupon code to lower the price even more.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever fit a group 49 into an 850/s70/v70?

The dimensions are basically the same, but it's 'longer'

A group 48 is 12 1/16" long, while the group 49 is 15".

It sure /looks/ like I'd be able to shim it in there, but I think one would have to have a go at it to really tell.

No, I have several 49's as they are the battery for my BMW's and Mercedes, and all my Volvos use 48's. They are way too long, even though their polarity is correct.
I buy my 48's from sur-power battery in san marcos. $40 "refurbished" with core return
Im an incorrigible cheapskate.

$30 total including leaving old core for a 47/48 from a local battery supplier with one-year replacement warranty. Done this for various vehicles and the cranking power is always there down to 0 F (what CCA is based on). Only had one dud which was apparent after a couple days and it was swapped about as fast as I could put the old on the counter. Didn't even have to bother with receipt as he remembered me and had it waiting as I called first.

If you're in or near a fairly major metro area, hit the yellow pages as there is likely a no-frills, no-advertizements, no-overhead, no-hype, no-hassle place doing the same near you.

Like with most products "you get what you pay for" trust me for a $30.00 difference there are substantial differences in the construction of the battery. I don't believe with the item that decides whether you go or not, you want the cheapest. Get a brand you can readily get & get a no-hassle warranty if it fails. What if your Duracell fails where the isn't someone to warranty it for you? What have you saved? Again this applies to many consumer items in our world not just auto parts. Good Luck

I have 4 cars at home and have been using Autozone Duralast batteries for the last 10 years but here is my gripe:
- Prices for Duralast battery keeps going up and up and up...Now it is about $130, $140 etc.
- They last about 2-3 years for me, almost like clockwork.

So, time for me to look at alternative. I was at local Menards hardware store.
Found Exide L3/48X battery for $94, with 40-month warranty.
It fits the 1998 Volvo S70 battery tray perfectly.

So, this is what I use now, time will tell how long it lasts.

Advance auto has 25% off deals almost every week. I bought a deep cell marine battery for a 12v roof pump setup for under $100.

My 4 year old Volvo battery in my s70 has gone dead twice in the past two weeks. Three days and it goes flat if I don't run it. It's been turning over slow since last summer so I think it's time is up. I sometimes go two weeks without driving it so that may have something to do with it.

For the most part I've had good luck with batteries regardless of where I buy them, I just don't buy the lower end ones.

Just changed mine a couple of months ago. Interstate and $130 from local mechanic.

Had a basic autozone battery before that - cant remember the brand name but i think duralast - that was like $90 and went for ~5 years.
