No... Just replaced it a few months back with some new stuff. More expensive nice stuff and it seemed to help.

When it turns it will get to an easy spot and the easy spots are always the same. It bounces back in forth in that easy spot and it hard on both sides of the spot. There are a few easy spots... Its really weird, but because the spots are always the same I feel like its not the pump.

Your u-joint between steering rack and steering shaft is bad (sticky)
Spray some penetrating oil on u-joint that will help for short period of time.
You will need to replace that joint.
I having same problem right now but spraying some kroil every month until weather worms up.

Hi all....had a chance to revisit my car issue yesterday. No power steering at all....checked the fluid level....it was pretty low. it turns out that I have a fluid leak. I can see it dripping down from my drivers side boot near the tie rod. I have to take another look to see if there is fluid visible anywhere else along the steering rack....

I have never worked on a steering system. I'd like to get some input on the severity and general repair difficulty of a fluid leak to figure out if it is something for me to consider doing or too take it straight away to my mechanic. Eg..is it usually a bad seal to replace or is it the whole system $$$

Also, I read a write up that stated the proper fluid is basic ATF fluid. Is this the case?
Tnx......

You might get by with just using an additive that may or may not stop your leak . I believe Lucas has a power steering additive that I've heard some guys have a pretty good success rate with . Check your local auto parts stores to see if they carry Lucas products .
I don't condone additives but sometimes it's worth a shot .

It's about 7" round rubber piece with a splined bushing in the middle.
Almost every single one of these now is starting to make noise, I think I've replaced about 20 of them
For reference, lower part of steering column with pinch bolt removed from the u-joint...

Hi All,
I had a chance to jack the car, at Valvoline Maxlife stop leak ATF (as others have used) and bleed the system. Every time I turned hard to the left, fluid would stream out of the drivers side boot area...only when I had the wheel turned to the max. I noticed that that boot is not fastened at the skinny end either. I did go through the bleed process and no fluid drained all day after doing the sever turn to the left. I'll check tonight to see if it dropped at all over night. So questions;

Does it sound like a seal leak on that side and could the maxlife actually expand the seal enough to considerably slow the leak preventing me from a PS replacement for a while? ie...is it safe to drive even with a not so bad leak as long as the level in the pump is at the proper level?

What does it mean that there was a considerable stream only with the hard turn to the left?

How can I know if a seal kit replacement is enough, or to pick a rebuilt for $120 or an after market from a place like Groton?

Should my mechanics service fee be roughly the same (excluding parts) to replace the PS system as opposed to the seal replacement in regard to hours/effort spend doing the job?
tnx...

Does anyone have a write up on how to replace the fluid in the power steering in the manner described above?
