2000 V70 NA Blue

Purchased her in October 2011 with 252K (kilometres) and with a suspected faulty transmission from interstate for $860. I was going to put the AW-50-42LE from my project '99 V70 when I realised that the 2000 model NAs have 5 speed AW 55-50SN gearboxes. From there I embarked on learning all I could about these and how I could solve the transmission issues.

1) November 2011 new front discs and pads, used rear discs from blue 850 at Pick A Part with new pads, wiper blades
Also fitted factory 16 inch wheels from blue 850 at Pick A Part with near new Firestone 205/55s Swapped headlight from '99V70 project car due to height adjuster failure.
Swapped brake master cylinder from '99 V70 project car. New filter & synthetic oil. Had local Volvo Bilia update ECM & TCM s/w. They recommended a new transmission at a cost of $4,500. WOW

Above cost: $665

2) January 2012 fitted B4 servo cover from Volvo Wholesale Parts and drained & filled tranmission with 12 litres Nulon Synthetic Trans fluid. Shifts are now tolerable though slight and quick flare on 2-3 shift. Adaptation not done properly. It seems as though it's getting better with more use

3) Feb 1st 2012 SRS light remains lit. Clock spring?? Can't read codes due to my Chinese Dice copy not working. Feb 23rd 2012 coolant light remains lit even though coolant level is checked. Replugged connector to coolant level sensor; no effect. Looks like a new one is needed. Rear headrest bushing driver's side collapsed and broke apart while folding seats

4) Feb 28th. Wife reported going over a very big pothole then a DTC started flashing and it went into limp home mode on the way home. Restarting the engine had no effect.

When she arrived home I hooked up my Autel MS509 and read a O2 sensor code on sensor 1. So I unplugged both O2 senors afew times, started the engine and the DTC was still there. Cleared the code twice as it insisted on returning and then it went away. Something tells me it will be back.

ETM has failed. I fitted a second hand unit in last night until the new part arrives for the failed one.

No cost yet.

Finally replaced the ETM sensor with a non-contacting Sacer sensor and it did the job of restoring the car's previous throttle response and reliability. Cost was only $135 for the sensor.

Replaced the original heater core manufactured in '99 with Swedish Autolamps core and firewall coupling (OEM) as well as both heater hoses. Also replaced thermostat and coolant reservoir hose. Cost: around $115 in parts.

Approximately 2.5 hrs labour.

Mileage now 273K (kilometres) Put new O2 front sensor in today which was from the '99 V70 project car (it had yet to be used so brand new)
Cost around $155

New front tyres 205/50/17 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT fitted & balanced and including wheel alignment.
Cost $555 inc GST

This is the most expensive tyre I have ever bought so I hope they are worth the investment. They sit really well on the rims and have a very flexible bulbous sidewall that affords the rims a lot of protection. Cheaper tyres such as 215/45/17 Blue Streak Stillettos now on the rear have very little rim protection.

Took out the driver's side strut to reveal a broken up spring seat so I tore the strut down to reveal a strut tube that would only work on compression stroke. The rebound stroke had almost no valving so she needs new front shocks.

Tore down the passenger side to reveal a cracked spring seat (but not totally broken like the other side)

The shock absorbers both appear to be original.
I have the spring seats in stock so I will use these and the bearing plates from the '99 V70 which are new.

The original radiator has also sprung a leak from a large crack in the side tank (fortunately I caught it early as the coolant level light warned me). I will order a new radiator tomorrow as well as new shocks.

Pretty much spent the whole day on the car; started at around 9:30am by driving out to Box Hill (Europarts) and picked up some Quinten Hazell front gas assisted shocks called Lip Tech. They didn't have the ABS sensor lead holders in the right position so adapted the old ones onto them with a silicon gun.

After calling around to 3 different radiator dealers finally decided to phone Stillwel Motor Group in Clayton and lo and behold, got an original VOLVO Valeo radiator for less than most of the aftermarket sellers.

By 8:00pm had swapped out the spring bearing plates from the '99 V70 which were unused and fitted new OEM spring seats part # 30683637 X 2 as well as the new radiator (part number 8603767) and put both cars back together: Personal Reminder to have 2 sets of spring compressors on hand next time around and bring my impact wrench and compressor.

I am aching from shoulders to legs but saved around $1,000 today at workshop prices.

Total cost in parts: $189 for shocks, $42 X 2 for OEM spring seats, Spring bearing plates $50, $299 for radiator= $622

Forgot to mention that about 4 months ago I replaced the coolant level sensor with a new one.

Finally got around to replacing the evaporator with a new one as well as new seals and receiver-drier. Replaced the gear position globe and repaired the cigarette lighter while I had everything out.

Had the car re-gassed with refrigerant and it works really well.

Cost was around $300 in parts and $290 for regassing inc labour to fit the receiver drier.

After the regas the compressor was noisy when operating. Strange as was dead silent beforehand. Compressor failed stalling the engine. New compressor on the way. Orifice tube not fitted by technician and they will (hopefully) pay for regassing. I suspect they didn't prime the compressor with PAG oil when the new receiver-drier was fitted.
