1989 244 Coolant Leak

Post by Adam_P_Michaels »

Hello All,

I have a 1989 244 non turbo B23. I recently developed a major coolant leak on the driver's side of the engine. Seems to be coming from somewhere under or around the starter/bell housing. The coolant runs back toward the firewall and over the transmission. I can not see or smell any coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant reservoir. My Haynes manual is utterly useless for troubleshooting this leak. Please help!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Query the B23 engine fitted to a 1989 car. The B23 was last used on the 1984 model. Is it a B230F?

On the driver's side the heater hoses are connected to two pipes which come through the bulkhead (firewall). Check the hoses and the hose clamps which keep them in place. If you do have to remove the hoses to replace them remember which one goes to which pipe.

MVS was down all day Sunday, so I called my grandpa to get some pointers. He thought it might be the heater hose, but said I should get out in the sunlight with a mirror and poke around with the car running. Sure enough, the top heater hose had a tiny split. Ten dollars and a half hour of swearing at my intake manifold and she was fixed.

Thanks Grandpa.

Thank you for the update.

My granddaughter has, from a very early age, said that if she bends it granddad mends it. She is now sweet sixteen and still comes to me with anything she breaks. What would you do without granddads?
