850 oil pressure issues, no oil in valvetrain
ok well, they're supposed to ship the motor today & we went the cheapest way possible (not so cheap) 7 day ground. Then it lands in a bonded warehouse for me to post bail - brokerage & duty - by the time all is said & done, I figure we're looking at sometime around Feb. 21st...then I need to arrange the swap. I can't imagine that line forming, but you're at the front...still doubt that's your issue. I guess we should stop cramming this server with mail...I've got 2 addresses [email protected] Mon-Fri 7 am - 5 pm EST, saltsman@ sympatico.ca all other times. In advance, you might want to look into how you want to ship this thing. If I remember right, it weighs about 3 lbs or so.

This support group is getting bigger. Thanks Matt, and Salty I'll be in contact off-list soon. Been swamped and it's been winter and I haven't touched my wagon in several days. I am trying to stay optimistic that my pump will come out in pieces. Right now I am trying to find some way to keep my crank from turning while I remove the lower pulley. Looking at big compressors and impact wrenches. Local rental joint doesn't have electric impacts. In the meantime, I'm watching the ice harden in my driveway.
Next group session soon.

This just in......engine tracker update (feel like I'm watching the santa report from NORAD on Christmas eve)....motor due to cross at Windsor tomorrow - Valentine's day (massicre). due in local bonded warehouse on Wednesday....going to try and clear this thing on my own & save brokerage fees (don't laugh, it will pay for the synthetic oil that's to go in it....& a playpen remember? new dad). Should have new organ on the shop floor by Friday, if all goes well. My dealer parts guy is busy calling in favours to see how many core returns he can make in the next few weeks - determined to see Volvo pay for this one way or the other! And if this ain't a final blow to the nads - car's never run better (did a 3 hour run north to clear snow off the boat at an avg 90 mph)....and not an oil pressure warning to be seen....& ya, the bulb lights on start up....did take a litre of oil for the trek I must admit ASTA LAVISTA! frickin anchor....get crackin - no sympathy re winter from the Great White North - going to rain here Wed & Thurs.....sounds like you have the perfect excuse for the wife to land a complete set of new air tools & compressor.

Okay Dudes, With terrific moral support as well as parts support and advice from Saltydog, here's what I've done to this car since I was here last: timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, oil pump, pan O-rings, filter, engine mounts, on and on.
So, all that stuff works fine and helps the car overall. But I still get no oil from pan to filter. While the oil pump was out, I checked the oilways from the pickup tube opening into the pump cavity, and then from there to the filter opening. Clean as a whistle. Not even stained with oil and no sign of sludge or evidence that any had lived there before.
So I'm thinking that I still have no draw from the pan. Is there a need to prime a new oil pump on an 850 engine? How would you do that? Or, is it possible that the O-ring kit was incorrect somehow, and not sealing? Everything stayed in place while I installed the pan, so the O-rings are in there correctly, but I have to think I'm getting no suction. And that sucks.
To sum up, new oil in the pan, new pump in the engine, still no oil making the short trip from pan to filter, and thus no oil getting to the rest of the engine.
What's the little brass-looking valve thing threaded into the top of the pan near the filter inlet? Somebody tell me it's that simple!
Thanks, GregO

Do you mean the coolant petcock? Looks like a giant brass grease fitting? What's the little brass-looking valve thing threaded into the top of the pan near the filter inlet?
Thanks Stoutlogic. No, I should've described that thing better. It's inside the pan, not visible unless the pan is removed. It is pretty small, maybe a 10 or 12 mm wrench to loosen or ighten it. It threads into the inside area of the oil pan, and looks like it's maybe some sort of one-way valve. It is installed near where the oil filter mounts, but again, inside the pan and not outside. After I installed the pan and started the car is when I began to wonder if that is some sort of valve that can be blocked and restricting oil flow, since the channels to and from the oil pump were clear.
But after more thought, it occurs to me that that valve or whatever would have to be the inlet to the filter in order for the filter to remain dry with the engine running. I doubt that's the case. So, this may be a long-winded nevermind.
As you can see, I am shooting in the dark, looking for a reason that I get no oil from pan to filter, even with a new pump.
Thanks for the help, and I am still curious as to what that little valve thing is.
Thanks, GregO

1995 850 T5 - 400Kms + Hi from South Africa. New question on old problem! Dont have time or facilities to do check/do all the issues mentioned above. Would welcome help from Volvo Wizard!
After warming up, oil pressure light comes on and some oil activity seen on valvetrain with noisy lifters. I had a serious sludge problem 20k kms ago [ flushed and cleared] but now suspect a clogged oil input pipe screen. Without dropping oil pan/sump, can I vacuum the screen/sieve of the oil input/uptake pipe through the oil drain plug hole? I would use a thin flexible pipe on a vacuum!
So my question really is : where PRECISELY is the oil intake pipe end/screen when I look through the plughole? Is it directly in front? How far off the sump floor is the screen in millimeters?
I would really appreciate any info on this query.
Matthews site is the most user friendly car site I have found and I have used its good advice for years. Many thanks to all of you who help so many Volvo owners!
