volvo 850 rebuild and 5 speed swap

Post by epicsurfjr »

Hello i am here to tell my amazing life of my 850. let me start off by saying that i am 17 and am a huge volvo fan :) I got the car for my 16th birth day it was my dads old 96 850 turbo. He got it back in 1998 as the second owner. Honestly i dont think he took very good car of it as far as the body but the engine he did. Before the 15th birthday the problems started with a bad radiator leaking oil into the coolant and ruining all the rubber lines. my mom was out driving it on the interstate and the hose blew but she didnt realize and kept driving. The engine started getting hot and weaker and she thought the lack of power was a bad turbo so she put her foot further to the floor it got so hot until it shut off and she killed it. i had a decision to make either keep it of sell it and buy something else i decided to keep it and overhaul the engine. I did the whole thing with my grandpa in my garage. it took several months but when it started up it ran good. there was few problems over the next year little things. i put my huge subwoofers in it and made it mine by the time i turned 16 i wanted more power so i ecu chipped it and out an exhaust. I started street racing and blew every car away people would drive up to me and ask what i had in my white volvo and i would say a 5 cylinder. they drove away in disbelief that there riced out honda or pretty much any v6 was beaten by a station wagon. one day i noticed coolant on my floor and it was a seal in the fire wall for the heater core. A few weeks ago i was out at this abandoned undeveloped neighborhood having some fun i should say earlier that day i noticed some steam coming out of my vents and found my heater core leaking. I decided it wouldnt be bad if i took it out that night and fix it in the morning. bad choice. when i got there it started dumping steam out the vents. i shut it off and figured one race couldnt hurt it so i gunned it and killed a 5 speed focus with a rally engine. but then i was out of water. i found enough and drove to a gas station to try and bypass the leaking core. i got there and it ran fine untill i dumped water on the engine to cool it off so i can work on it. i bypassed the core successfully and started it up and steam started pooring out the exhaust. i was pissed. i called a tow truck because i was sure i blew a headgasket. but i was confused because it never over heated i was carefully watching the temperature. this happened a year after a engine overhaul. when i go home i was honestly depressed and stressed. i love this car probably more than anything in the world and it just broke. after pulling the plugs and finding water in the cylinder i decide to tow it to my school where i am working on it and improving it. my goal is to reach 340hp. I will do this buy upgrading my 15g turbo to an 19t by putting a bigger compressor wheel and housing. I am also rebuilding my turbo and doing a 5 speed swap my engine is currently on the ground with the body above it on a lift.
