HELP v40 brake pads and rotors wont come off the car

Post by MPM2000V40 »

someone help me!!!!! I have changed brakes and rotors on a number of cars in the past.

The 2000 V40 has beaten me, I give up I thought this was going to be simple..My issue is I cant separate the calipers and get off the rotors to change the pads and rotors...I have tried everything fronts rear, a 10lb hammer....Just kitting on the hammer. What's the trick??? bleeding the caliper did not work. The caliper is not seized, I just need new rotors and pads, they are sitting in my garage on my work bench and not in the car.....This car has been a gem no issues till now

HELP any hints and or pictures or a web site would be great

THANKS

Elaborate.

Front or rear or both?

Assuming that you're referring to the front, have you removed the two bolts (the ones with the 7mm Allen head) that hold the calipers onto the steering knuckle?

If you have removed the bolts the caliper and the pads should just slide right off. The may take a firm push, in and out, to relieve the back pressure on the hydraulic system or at worst a large screwdriver to pry the calipers side to side. At any rate the upper portion of the calipers and the inboard pads come out together. The outboard pad stays with the bottom half of the caliper bracket. The whole caliper assembly does not come off as one piece.

To get to your rotors you need to remove both the upper part of the caliper (above) and the lower portion of the caliper from the steering knuckle (the two other bolts on the back side of the rotor below the allen heads you removed to get the upper caliper off) and remove the locator pin from the outboard side of the rotor. The rotor should then come off with, at worst, a light tap of a hammer.

If you are working on the rears I have a post here at Matthew's site with pictures(Specific to an 850 but it should be the same on a V40):

It is more focused on the parking brake than the pads and rotors but the same things apply. To get your rear pads out it is simply a matter of driving out the two small pins located just below the top of the caliper and pulling the pads out. The pins are the ones that hold in the anti rattle spring and go through the loops on the pads.

I noted that you bled the caliper or at least opened the brake system. Once you replace the rotors and the pads please bleed the entire system so as to remove all of the air.
