Very funny indeed!
But the very same thing is happening between Americans and Germans. I can't tell you how many times I tried to translate jokes - and all I got was blank stares. And still I'm embarrassed sometimes when somebody cracks one and I just don't get it. It's totally a cultural thing. The good thing is, now I can laugh about and my friends do too. That was not always the case when I first got here.

Dirk - you're doing fine, don't worry. "Non-English speakers are not held to this standard." -- first sentence of the first post in this topic. I should amend that to say "English as a 2nd/3rd/4th/etc. language MVS users are not held to this standard." I will.

These written language rules are aimed at those who want to bring phone texting practices to this forum. Besides being difficult to read, it's simply impolite. When I need help, I say "please" and "thank you", and try to help the helper. It's about civility, camaraderie, a bond... even if it's a bond made because of something as weak as "we drive the same brand of car."

And yes, I wish the commonly used plural was "fora" not "forums". I can live with it. "Mediums" I can't live with, however, but that's a rant for another thread.

Hi Matthew,

I have a 2001 V40. I am trying to connect a 3.5 mm jack plug connector to the head unit. I have removed the CD cartridge and the tape cartridge. It is a HU-605. There is a white ribbon connector from the tape cartridge to the main PCB. Is this the ribbon I need to solder into? It is labelled on one side but has no PIN numbers . Can you help please?

Respectfully,
Jim Hood. :D

Ha ha! I'm an English teacher and I just used "forums" in my (second to) last post even though I harp on data and datum, media and medium with my students.

The posts here with non-standard English or unfamiliar euphemisms simply indicate a more educated European or (___________) has weighed in. By that I mean contributed something to the relevant topic.

I really wanted to use "fora" when appropriate, but when I started this board and looked around to see if it was used/understood by the Web masses, I found the term was just not used. This is the rare case when a proper word is counterproductive here.

A decade or so ago, one of the USA tv networks showed a drama series about a Jewish lawyer from Munich who fled to Kenya with his family a few years after the Nazis took over in Germany. During the war he served heroically as an officer in the British army in north Africa and therefore at the end of the war he was offered a professional job in London and the chance to pursue British citizenship, but he chose instead to return to Germany, which baffled his British officer friends. He stated: "I was born in Bavaria and German was my first language, I could never become English!": At this point a corporal typing at a desk in the office, who had been quiet till then, said: "I know what you mean! I'm a Scot!"

I always thought my English was pretty decent, not perfect, but decent. I used to get very annoyed with certain English basics being misused, ex: to, too and two, there, their and they're, so I've been biting my tongue by not correcting everyone all the time, but it seems that many never listed to THEIR teacher in 3rd and 4th grades!

I've never heard the word "fora" used as the plural for forum.
While it may be correct, if it's never used it will fade away and forums will become the accepted, correct word usage.

My favorite that I used to catch everyone is/was the word FORT... as used in someone's strength.
99% of English speaking people use the word FORTE, (accent over the 'E"), which by Webster's definition is incorrect (forte is as in a musical note), but by common incorrect usage over the past 60 years it has now becoming the norm and will be considered correct very soon... if it isn't already!

By the way, from what I understand, "fora" is really most commonly used in England, not here.
