Replacement key and FOB

Post by Chuck711 »

What all is involved in getting a replacement key for a 2005 V70 T5. This key has the remote for the door locks built in it. I imagine this something that has to be programmed by a dealer? How much shop time is typically involved in this and what should I expect it to cost? This is not a normal looking key so I do not think a locksmith could make one.

I do not know about the 2005's, but on a 2002 you must purchase from the dealer. The dealer will have to reprogram the car for the key after the key comes in to the parts dept. You have to have all keys and remotes at the dealers for them to reprogram. Unlike most other carts, the car is programed to the key, the key is not programed to the car.

If you don't have a good relationship with your dealer this is going to cost you big timeI don't know retail prices but I would guess substantially over $325 to $350.
At least $200+ for the switchblade combo
Another $80 or so for TWO software downloads and dealers usually charge an hour labor to program them (even though it takes about 10 minutes TOPS).
(These are retail prices but I have to pay over $200 and that's at wholesale)!
Negotiate with them as you have no other choice except a Volvo dealer

You do NOT have to have the other keys with you.
I'm not sure why the poster said that unless he was programming all new codes into them

I was told that I needed all other keys by the dealer. They said that to reprogram the car they needed all the keys and only three keys could be programed for one car. That was what I was told when I needed a new key and fob. I only got one of each when I bought it.

I wish I could find another dealer closer. As it is, this one is 30 minutes away, the next closest is over an hour away.

Just double checking... is this still true?
I should get a blank key on ebay for $30 and then take it to the dealer for programming and cutting? Or can a locksmith cut it?

Avoid eBay like the plague! That's my advice. I've just dropped my 2005 S60 switchblade fob into the brine and the dealer's quoting $415 plus taxes. But while I've found an alleged "replacement", including blank keys, on eBay, I've read way too many comments where people did so and were stuck with an incompatible fob.
