I replaced my Sachs with Sachs. Anything stiffer rides like a truck and the Bilsteins change the ride height upwards, the wrong way. KONI would be the choice if you don`t desire Sachs

I've always used Bilstein HDs, except on my 744t which was all about speed, it got Koni sports with H&R lowering springs.
I actually like the ride height increase of the HDs, helps with annoying speed bumps and rough roads, increases ground clearance, and makes it easier for my long-legged self to get out of the vehicle. Not what I'd use for a vehicle focused on speed, though.
My "tank" (88 745GLE) has HDs all around with iPD overload springs on the back and OE diesel wagon springs on the front.
Yup, it's pretty much a wagon-truck.
Still can't decide on what to slap on the new 850T5. It's tempting to go the speed-demon direction, but my more practical and logical side says I should stick with my original intention of building a mild-mannered daily driver that'll still spank the occasional idiot in his stock 4-banger wanna-be sportscar. F those guys
... So I'm thinking Bilstein TCs or stock OE... I'll probably ponder on it until one of the parts places puts one or the other on sale. Koni FSD's are mighty tempting, but.. not cheap!

The OP mentioned that other front-end parts look brand new. Maybe the struts are too. Take the whole strut, spring and all. Might be better than yours and it should be cheap.

This is exactly what I did. Even though the car was only three years newer than mine, the struts looked much better. They were in fact much better at $35. each complete.rmmagow wrote:The OP mentioned that other front-end parts look brand new. I recently did rear Bilstein Touring and planned on doing the same for the front in the spring until I found this deal for a single Sachs on ebay. I will likey go ahead and pick up another from FCP in the spring.

Resurrecting old thread with new info, sachs struts have a date code pin stamped on them in ddmmyy format
See photo date is 6 day of September 2018
Source: I worked in a German owned steering gear manufacturing plant (RH SHEPPARD, HANOVER PA) this is SOP for German manufacturing plants. I often programmed the pin stampers that placed the dates.
