Loud when driving 35-40mph

Post by hdurham »

I have a 2004 xc90 with approx 95,000...A couple months ago I had a flat which was patched and drove-on for about 2 months...during that time I started to notice a loud humming noise when driving 35-40mph. The noise gets quieter over 40mph. Have had the tires replaced but no change...any suggestions?

Mostly likely the hub-bearing assembly is on its way out. I lived through it entire summer, then the noise became constant above 30mph. You would not hear anything else but the noise.
I replaced both front around thanksgiving.

yea i agree, humming noise is almost always associated to wheel bearings and gets worse over time.
don't think the tyre will have caused it though.

It was Justin who suggested, that is, drive at a constant speed next to a separating wall on freeway. If the noise does not change with the change of RPM, then for certain, it is hub-bearing. In my case he was right on.

Grabbing wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock, and then 6 and 12, looking for movement is any shop's way to reach for your pocket.

Some would argue a play in constant velocity (CV) joint at the outer axle, look for clicking when driving on a curve, or making a turn.

Search this forum for "cv joint", "hub bearing" to get started.

so..finally took it in and they say the "rear end is going bad". Has anyone had this happen? Also, the shop I took it to recommends getting rid of it due to history of transmission problems...

Did they give you a quote or say exactly what the parts needed are. As mentioned its probably hub bearings and to be honest, thats a maintenance item on any vehicle with high miles.

Transmission, well the GM transmission mated to the T6 has been known to be problematic, but if you have a 2.5T you should be fine. On that note if you have a 2.5T find a new mechanic if you can.
