I'm still in disbelief that Volvo is now a subsidiary of Ford... blegh... :x

I wonder what else this will mean for Volvo in the future...

I try to convince myself that Ford is only trying to capatilize on Volvo's safety experience, etc. but I cringe at the thought of Ford and Volvo's sharing engines, platforms, etc in the future. Thank god mine is pre-Ford!

Ford owns over eight trademarks, and collectively they are still in a financial crisis. But rest assured, a Volvo will be a Volvo from platform up. (i.e. Mazda 3 v/s Volvo S40). As for power plants, Volvo asked Yamaha to make the V8 for the XC 90 and the new S 80, but they went to the drawing board and designed the new inline 3.2 liter engine, and also the D-5 engine. While it's true Volvo is sharing engines with other Ford companies, I hear that Ford has an inline-5 that's based on Volvo's development in that area.

As for the original Volvo, only the car division is sold to Ford, and they still generate a lot of revenue making buses and bus platforms, and rigs. Volvo makes good cars, but sadly they don't sell well enogh to offset development costs.
