Extremely poor running. 99 S70 NA

Post by waynej »

Purchased used S 70 recently. Seller said it sometimes runs awful and you disconnect battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect and it runs fine. On the test drive it had an extremely rough idle, very poor acceleration and would not go over 30mph. Disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and it ran perfect. Purchased the car and drove home, about 100 miles. Most of the trip on narrow roads was at about 60mph. If I changed throttle position slightly there was a hesitation and a slight stumble. Tried cruise control and same thing happened when approaching a slight hill etc.
Got the car home and parked it, next morning it runs awful and disconnecting battery no longer has any affect. There was a code for lack of communication with ETB. Cable to ETB had been cut and spliced with butt style crimp connectors and black tape. Redid splice with solder joints and shrink tube. Still runs awful but no code. Tried unplugging coil packs one at a time, but no difference. Checked injectors with stethoscope at idle, all clicked at about the same volume.
Does anyone have any ideas?

By ETB do you mean electronic throttle?

The first step is to have the car scanned properly while the engine is not behaving and is in limp home mode.

This throttle is a Magnetti Marelli unit and has caused many problems. Very easy to remove and replace on the non turbo Volvos. FCP Euro have Volvo refurbished units with non-contacting sensors installed.

Once you post up some codes you should be able to get some more specific answers.

Thanks Precopster, Yes I mean Electronic Throttle Body.
Since clearing the codes none came back. It's been sitting a couple of months-I'll check codes again. Tried running it with ETB unplugged. Two times the idle was so high that it was hard to tell if the miss was as bad. One time the idle was normal and the miss was just as bad without the ETB.

There's a whole forum devoted to the ETM on Volvos: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... m.php?f=12

I'm sure once you scour enough you may find some like symptoms. Again you need to scan the car properly and with a scanner that will read all Volvo codes.

Thanks, Read everything there about a month ago. None of the symptoms are a close match for mine. Posted here as that forum appears to have been mostly abandon since 2008.
In the early 2000's there were post about a guy in Canada who rebuilt the ETMs with much better parts that seemed to last forever. Does anyone know if he is still in business?

Forget XeModex for now. FCP Euro's rebuilt by Volvo ETMs now have contactless sensors built in and for cheaper. Only $459. The only snag is the core deposit of $150 & the dealer programming requirement. Just picked one up for a customer.

Look at the end cap and compare to the one on the right. That's a magnetic contactless sensor. That's a first for Volvo and a total concession on their part to the flawed film design.

I am not near a dealer and normally do all my own work. Do they all need to be programmed, or just those from FCP? Does it run good enough without the programming to get it to the dealer?

XeModex's run without programming. The dealer and FCPs require initialisation. However if you can GET to a dealer you would just bolt it on in the parking lot. Takes 5 minutes on an NA V70 unless the signal cable is routed behind the starter.

how much does a dealer charge for the initilisation so add that when doing the cost comparison.

also the fcp euro rebuilts are using the saccr contactless part. which can be had on ebay for 140 and then install yourself and you have your original that does not need to be reprogrammed to the car
has anyone tried this yet ?

im just thinking out-loud as I have to do this myself, on my mom in laws, one of the options
