I just bought a 2000 XC V70 off my boss for 250 bucks. I figure there is no way I can lose money on this deal!

He said the tranny is out. It will not move in forward or reverse. I pulled 2 codes out of it with my basic scanner.
P0740 TCC Solenoid and P0733 Gear 3 incorrect ratio. After writing these down, I cleared the codes and put it in drive. I felt it go into gear and it moved on its own. I pulled forward 5 feet and then put it in reverse, nothing! I let it warm up a little and I had no movement after that.

I do not know where to go from here! I have read about the valve bodies, and the torque converters and the tcm needing an update. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I also pulled a code of P1618: Lead between AW 50-52 and motronic 4.3.
This one I have no clue.

Hey, welcome.

I was a Volvo guy that bought a Chevy :D

How's the fluid look in that transmission? That's showing that 2/3 solenoids aren't operating properly, BUT they may just not be achieving correct pressures because the fluid is horribly dirty.

The P1618 isn't one that I've seen before, but that may be the root of the problem. The ECU/TCU are located in the black box near the coolant tank. Pull them out and see if any contacts look like they need to be cleaned.

The fluid was the first thing I checked. Not to bad, with no burnt smell. I will check those contacts as soon as possible. I would say tonight but there is a blizzard going on right now and Ill probably have to shovel out the front of the car. This car seems pretty nice. It has 204k on it but runs like a top. The body is straight with nice paint and good interior. Not to mention it has brand new tires on it! My boy is about to turn 16 and I think this might be a good first car if it doesnt turn out to be a money pit.

Welcome, E66. Chevy guy huh? Careful owning a Volvo! (Some are pleasantly surprised how well these cars are built -- never thought of owning one before -- and change allegiances. I can't explain Justin ;-)).

Do some drain and fills on the trans fluid, like Justin said. Not a flush. Search my site for D&F and more...

If all else fails, I would not hesitate to replace it with a good used transmission. These Aisin transmissions are some of the toughest I've seen, and failures are not very common.

You could try replacing the solenoids, but it's a risk that you'll waste a huge amount of time. Worked for me, though.

Are these external solenoids on this transmission, or are they part of the valve body? And does the trans need to come out to change these?

They're under a cover at the front of the transmission. Look at it from underneath, and you'll see the brass-looking cover.

It does not need to be dropped - however, some of the screws are difficult to reach.

Thanks for the great info! I believe Ill start with checking the tcu and then do a drain and fill on it. If that doesn't work Ill dive in deeper!

I will add to change the fluid, but it is critical that you use the correct fluid.
the fluid for the 5 speed auto is different then the 4 speed auto.
a couple of drain and fills is not that expensive, if you do a flush, which you can find out the correct way here at the forum, you will need about 12 qts, a couple of drain and fills is about 6 ats, if I remeber correctly

other than that sounds like a screaming deal, never find one like that when I want to

worst and sad case scenerio, part it out, youll make a bunch
