Video presenting the new Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Autobrake. If a cyclist heading in the same direction suddenly swerves out in front of you as you're approaching from behind and a collision is imminent, there is an instant warning and full braking power is applied.

Pretty cool feature. Volvo's also working on a system (or maybe it's the same one) to detect & monitor pedestrians as well.

The new V40 has the pedestrian safety system. It includes a pyrotechnically tilted hood to give a softer landing and an airbag that blows in front of windshield from rear edge of the tilted up hood.

I think the time has come that persons walking must carry liability insurance. If you walk out in front of my car with $3000 or so worth of pedestrian safety gear and it deploys I bet my insurance company comes to you to get their money back.
