2000 XC70 cranks but will not start
Another XC70 will not start issue. I'm driving home on the highway last week and all of a sudden my car goes from 70MPH to 50MPH to 35MPH. I inch along the shoulder and get off the exit to call the tow truck given I was 25 miles from home (check engine light is now on). I get home and scan the codes and up comes P1171 and P0305. I Google the codes and it looks like I have a bad Mass Air Flow. So I replace both the MAF (Bosch) and the air filter and try to start the car but all it does is crank, start for a few seconds, and then dies. I disconnect the wire to the MAF and the car does the same. I disconnect the battery for a few minutes and then reconnect it but I get the same symptoms. I'm going to pull the plugs to see if they are wet with fuel (I can smell gas and I do hear the fuel pump) and dry them off (I replaced the plugs about 2000 miles ago). Not sure what else could be wrong. I even tried stepping on the gas pedal while cranking the engine and it does start for a few seconds but then stalls. Would a bad O2 sensor cause the car not to start?

I would check the fuel pressure, or look for a possible vacuum leak before looking to the front O2 sensor for the 1171. I believe the 0305 is a cylinder 5 misfire code. Maybe it needs an ignition coil, or the injector in that cylinder is faulty, causing both codes? Let's see what some others on here might have to say.
bad MAF doesn't usually cause non-start issue. just poor running. what does your timing belt look like? car will also run with just a bad coil pack. your motor died while you were running, so might want to check compression

I pulled the plugs and they have some gas on them so I dried them off and replaced. Disconnected the battery and let the car sit for about an hour. Connected everything back up and tried to start it again. It starts and then dies. All the warning lights on the dash come on when I turn the key to position II. When the car stars the lights go off and then the car stalls. Timing belt appears to be okay. I changed it at 110,000 miles with the water pump, idler, and tensioner. I'll check the timing belt to make sure it did not jump timing but that is very unlikely. Compression should be fine given the car only has 112,000 miles on her (one owner vehicle). I was thinking maybe a bad coil but I would think it would still run just very rough.

I swapped the ignition coil for the fifth cylinder from my '99 S70 and tried to start the car again. The car started and ran for a few seconds but then the RPM's dropped below 1000 and the car stalled. I tried giving it some gas and it revved to 3000 RPM's but then stalled. Seems like it might be a problem with not enough fuel so I'm going to test the pressure off the fuel rail once I get a better gauge. Still no CEL (no other idiot lights stay on once the car starts for the few seconds).

Is it okay to replace the fuel pump by just replacing the pump motor? It's much cheaper than the whole pump. Bosch part number 69693 (costs ~ $87.00).

Update on my findings. Well it finally is warm again so I can work on the Volvo again. Car has been sitting since October in my garage (extra vehicle). Yesterday I swapped all the ignition coils from my S70, replaced the camshaft positioner sensor with one from a junk yard car (might use the S70 to better test), jumped the fuel pump relay with a paper clip and now the car runs for a few seconds and then dies. It almost seems to run normally but after about 10 seconds the engine speed starts to drop and the motor stalls. No check engine light. Fuel gauge reads just over half a tank. I have not tested the fuel pressure but I did press on the bleed valve and gas does come out when the key is in the on position. It does appear that it just is not getting enough fuel pressure after about 10 seconds. Could the fuel pressure regulator be bad? BTW I put all the XC70 parts into my S70 and that car starts and runs fine.

I finally bought the fuel injector pressure gauge tester from Harbor Freight and hooked it up to the fuel rail in the wagon. Turning the key and attempting to start the car sends the pressure gauge to about 15psi so I hooked it to my S70 and the pressure hit about 50psi while the car was cranking. I also noticed that while screwing in the hose to the fuel rail on the S70 gas immediately came out of the valve. This did not happen on the XC70. So I guess I will be replacing the fuel pump (both of them?) after all.
