You need to read the car with VIDA DiCE. (The cost of the diag. tool itself cannot qualify the tool for reading all proprietary Volvo codes.)
With VIDA DiCE you can run the solenoid tests, and you can reset the Transmission Fluid Counter, etc., and possibly get rid of some of the alarms.

If there is no apparent bulb out when you check, the "bulb failure" alarm could be triggered by a failing shunt.

To upload files in general, you need to hit the Full Editor Tab (located just below the box where you type your text), and you will then see the Options and Upload Attachment tabs underneath.

Hope this helps :D
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

@regent, thanks for the good info. You're right, I agree about VIDA DiCE. I'm just bummed because the car won't make the drive to the dealership and I'll have to have it towed, which could be more money down the drain if it can't be fixed.

Will doing anything with the valve body, solenoids, fluid counter etc...fix what is now a slipping transmission though? I don't understand enough about the inner workings of these drive trains to know that.

The bulb failure is a total mystery, but not too worried about it until tranny is fixed. Forgive the dumb question, but what is a failing shunt? Any other topics out there that show the fix for this already you're aware of? I've heard it could have something to do with the brake position sensor, which could also be why the cruise isn't working and the 'service engine system' is displaying.

The current draw in most bulb circuits is monitored by reading the voltage drop over a very small resistance in series (the shunts are those resistors). The computer compares the v-drop to a preset value and if it is out of tolerance, then it declares a fault.

The Bulb Failure related messages on DIM are triggered:
1. if the bulb is blown (no current detected)
2. or if the bulb is OK, AND it has the wrong wattage rating (too small or too large current detected).

If all bulbs are of the right type and working, swap the shunt with a known good one. You want to inspect the shunt's contact pins for oxidation, as well as the condition of the socket. If that does not clear the fault, then the computer still cannot 'see' current (I would look for an open circuit between the shunt and the computer.)

I wish I had more mechanical expertise to give you further hints on diagnosing your transmission issue - but not without 'reading' the car with VIDA... (We are doing our best with what we have) :D

On another thought, you may not have to take her to the stealership, you could look for an indie with VIDA instead; many of them have portable equipment (VIDA on a laptop like some of us have)

Let's hope that someone here who has seen a situation like yours may chime in with some better thoughts.

There are many small bulbs perhaps you're just missing one that's out
As I said above (not withstanding to the peanut gallery), the tranny (as of now) is toast.

You MAY or may not be able to fix it but this won't come cheap (new valvebody and solenoids in the least), but you may have a bad toque converter, and in that case it's just simpler to either do a total rebuild or buy a new (rebuilt) transmission from Volvo.

You did not post the mileage which makes a difference and you did not do your homework before you spent your hard earned money...you bought an 01!
Your worrying about a simple light bulb is a bit concerning, you have major issues and the light bulb is certainly not one of them.

What is the transmission serial number?

It has 110K miles. You're right, I'm not worried about the other stuff till the tranny is taken care of. You're also right, that I jumped into the Volvo with the generalization that people love them and get 300K consistently out of their cars. Now I'm simply trying to make the best of the less than ideal situation I find myself in.

Any opinions on the transmissions I see on the internet ranging from $800-1200? Is it stupid to buy something like this?

No
Any used 01 tranny will be (97%) as bad as the one you have now, they're ALL bad to start with.
Read all about 2001 transmissions on any Volvo site
You need a new or a correct rebuild with the latest software installed

That ad links to a manual transmission; a conversion is not such a bad idea.

If you're going to buy a used auto trans for one of these it would be best to find one from a car that has had impact damage at the rear and a recent factory Volvo rebuild.

I bought a VIDA/DICE tool off of a US buyer on ebay and it works okay. They aren't that expensive. I do wonder what is different though, because the shop was able to make my light switch mean off when it's "off", where before it was (off=on, park=park, on=on). I haven't found out how that could be done in the VIDA that I have (2011D?).

Anyway, part of the problem with waiting to fix the trans before the engine and other stuff is working that, on my car, when the engine has trouble, the transmission is kind of crappy also. Since I haven't figured out what is wrong with mine yet, I can't tell you what to look for. But my cruise stopped working intermittently, now it almost never works. But I have no codes, no errors, just runs crappy and no smoke or pressure from the dipstick either. =( I don't, know...maybe it's the pedal sensor...since that would affect the throttle, transmission and engine.. I guess.
