New S70 Owner

Post by Rizzle921 »

Hi all! I bought a 99 S70 from CL about a month ago for $2000. Been doing all the research I can on certain things, I am NOT a mechanic or even really all that knowledgeable on cars, but my hubby's friend is a mechanic (not one who specializes in Volvos though) and I can forward him things I've learned if the car does need repairs. Only big thing we've done so far is had him change a loud, axle/CV joint. I bought some leatherette seat covers since my drivers side had some missing leather, but the covers match pretty well, and bought a replacement fuel door latch (which was so easy, even I could pop the old one out and put the new one in, lol).

The car has about 163k miles on it, and only issue we've had is it almost feeling like it'll stall out at stop signs and stop lights. I've read this could be a failing throttle module, which I hope it isn't. I sent the car to mechanic friend and he said electronic throttles shouldn't be cleaned? I saw the tutorial and figure I'll try it myself, it looks fairly easy,(correct me if I'm wrong) especially with the photos as guides. My mom (who used to have a volvo and was on this forum as well actually) said to try changing the fuel pump relay andeven the engine air filter as well (can't hurt?). And also, when mechanic friend checked it over, he said a vacuum hose wasn't attached properly (almost not attached at all) and that could be causing it as well. Oh and the other problem is the loud popping driver's side door, but I've also found a tutorial on how to fix that.

ANYWAY, looking forward to learning what I can on here, and forgive me if I don't know what something means, I've NEVER worked on cars in my life, but hopefully from here I can at least try and diagnose problems that arise. I will post a picture in the photo thread. :)

Welcome, Rizzle. Look over Stage 0. It's a goal, and if you can get to it, everything is easy to diagnose from there.

ETMs can and should be cleaned by someone who knows how to this properly.
That mechanic doesn't know Volvos too well
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Right, I posted that in my OP. ;) He is willing to help with what he can, but Volvos aren't his specialty and he doesn't want to do anything to damage the car. I think I can do it if I follow the tutorial, I've read not to spray the throttle cleaner directly into it, but to spray it on a rag first. I usually can do ok if I follow directions to a T with certain things, and being that this is an accessible area, I think I will be able to. I've also looked at some YouTube videos of it being done. :)

He can take it apart and get to the throttle easily, he just didn't want to actually DO anything with it because he was unsure of the car getting damaged.

So is this something I shouldn't attempt? Even if I follow the tutorial (http://v-garage.ca/index.php?/Volvo-Thr ... le-Service) step by step? I don't have the money to shell out right now to get it done at a dealership, from what I've read, they charge and arm & a leg for everything.
