Dealer brake job

Post by mar601 »

Original owner of a beloved 98 S70 T5 with just 125K.

Know I have a front caliper problem and thought I may just do a complete front and rear brake overhaul.

Would anyone be so kind as to fill in the blanks on pricing based on their experience? (I always go to the Volvo dealer). Just a rough idea would be great. Calling them is a pain.

Front brake overhaul (new pads, rotors, calipers) $ _______ ?

Rear brake overhaul (same) $ _________ ?

THANKS

Probably $1200 for the front and $1000 for the rear. This is why I do it myself.

If you're near me, I'll do it for half of whatever the dealer would charge ... :)

You certainly do not need to use a dealer.
If you want original Volvo parts, buy them and take them to ANY general mechanic's shop.
Nothing here is Volvo specific or tricky in any way

The caliper seals + 4 hoses (the hose above the rear delta link is impossible to get to, unless the pipe is removed from the car) cost about $140. To overhaul the hydraulic system it is not that hard:

Pad/Rotor: check eeuroparts or autohausaz for prices.

Roughly 1000 each in upstate NY IMHE.

Ive managed to pull repair off for 150 in parts in my driveway on a warm January day, in <4 hours of work for the front.

There is a very nice iPhone app called RepairPal that gives great estimates of repair work for a given location. I have found their estimates to be very accurate. They are also on the web.

For a '98 S70 in Omaha, NE (your location just says "midwest" so I picked Omaha), replacing both front calipers is $795 at a dealer and the pads and both rotors are another $528.

An independent garage at the low end of the price range would be $355 and $386.

The rears are almost exactly the same cost ($20 less than the fronts).

Doing this yourself is not very hard - just an afternoon for the front and another for the rear - and you can save huge $$$ and get the best parts.

2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.

I just had the rears done on my 95 850 $300.00+. I dont think it was even done correctly. I see a 3-4" gap between the rotor and where a pad would be on both sides. Moral of the story do it yourself or pay volvo. Something I should have done.
