Update to my tranny dillemma. 95 850t auto.

Post by Southbay850 »

Hello MVS. Yesterday I decided to finally see if any of my attempts to fix my tranny before I had to replace it. I tried all of the suggested fixes to see if any of them would work before giving up so easy. I checked all of the fluid, smelled it and the color in tranny. Everything looked good. I put her in reverse and nothing. I could feel the car attempt to move with my pushing the gas to rev the rpms. So knowing I failed I took it for a one last spin before her long down time. The car drove like a new car. That was short lived after she warmed up a little. I started noticing when I slow down to come to a stop and apply the brake the rpms start to drop below idle speed and she stalls. I start it back up and all is well until there is any type of load on tranny. Park and Nuetral are normal but put it in drive and she runs like crap. No check engine lights yet or codes. I guess I was hoping that there was some small chance that one of the many helpful suggestions would help. Dont get me wrong I did manage to get it to start, stop smoking and move in which it didnt previously. We all do the denial thing. Who wants to admit their volvo has failed them. Well I am ready to start the new chapter with her and its going to be a long road ahead but I am not giving up.

So, it's not wanting to idle in drive or it can't seem to grab a gear?

Not wanting to idle in drive is not a tranny issue. but not grabbing a gear is.

Not wanting to idle could be a number of things from clogged fuel injectors, fuel pump relay/fuel pump, fouling plugs, short in the wires, bad coil, fuel starvation, failing starter, etc....

Not grabbing gears points to a slipping tranny and planetary gears not engaging. sounds like it's time for a rebuild or a pull one out of the junkyard.

How many miles on it before the tranny started acting this way? Did you change/check the fluid regularly?

It wont idle in drive after warm up. When I drive it for a couple minutes the engine will stall when slowing down or making a full stop.It seems like the tranny puts the engine under too much of a load and does not go into the normal idle you would have when you slow to a stop and are still in drive with foot on brake. It grabs gears fine except reverse. Someone else mentioned it could be soleniods.

Again, have you replaced the fluid?

Hmm...sounds like the torque converter solenoid is stuck.

A flush may work, but generally once you lose reverse, the transmission is doomed.

you could try running the shifter up and down 10-15 times to be sure contacts are clean. idle prob: did you try unplugging the MAF to see if it runs better? Clean the IAC? if the car runs well, why are you thinking tranny is bad?

Replaced fluid 2x complete drain and refill also cleaned the filter that volvo says does not exist. Cleaned and tested pnp and shifter by removal of center council. I pulled the trans fluid lines to radiator and tried that method and it seemed as it had very little pressure when pumping fluid.
