Suddenly started missing, NO power. Fuel pump?

2005 V70 T5 136k kms.

I punched it a wee bit going up a hill yesterday.

The car hesitated twice .. clunk clunk .. almost like an engine cutout, then ran up the hill same as normal.

At the top of the hill though, it started to run REALLY rough, with no power at all, and no ability to accelerate at all. Then the check engine light came on.

I was able to get the car home, about 30 miles of city driving, keeping in lower gears, but I was NOT kind to clutch at the traffic lights.

Once home. I left it idling (very roughly) and heard a funny sort of buzzing coming from the engine compartment that I don't remember hearing before. I think it's coming from a silver can, about 2" or so in diameter, low in the left front.

I have no idea what this part is, or if it's even relevant to the problem.

This FEELS like a bad fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter, but I don't really know, and wouldn't expect either as a problem at this reasonably low mileage.

Any troubleshooting hints appreciated!

Did a CEL light come on?

I had something similar, also quite suddenly, and it transpired that it was a failed coil on #5 cylinder. I replaced the one coil but plan to do a complete set replacement (ipd HD coils) soon as there are still occasional misfires.

If you don't have an OBD II code reader, go by an auto parts store and have them read out what code(s) caused the check engine light. You need that before you even begin to speculate what's going on.

My wife's S-80 would crap out like that going up hill (accelerating up on-ramps, etc.) for quite a while before it finally threw a check engine light, the error code for which led us to a bad fuel pressure sensor - a common weakness in those engines. But don't start buying parts until you get the fault code.
