2002 s60 awd, my awd isnt working

i noticed that my awd isnt working so i jacked the car so all 4 wheels are off the ground, and put it in drive. the back wheels spin but not as fast as the front and i can easily stop both rear wheels at the same time. when i stop both rear wheels and push the accelerator the rear wheels "push" harder but i can still easily keep the wheels from spinning. also when i push the accelerator (with the wheels stopped) the rear wheels start jerking and make a loud humming noise. Im wondering if anyone has any idea what is going on? any help would be appreciated. thanks
