940 Service light came on: 2 codes...1-3-2, 2-2-2

Post by 98T5 »

93' 940/4 banger/ Regina

1-3-2 - Check Battery voltage.... Battery $150 new
2-2-2- Main relay...Main relay $24 bucks online

Which one do you think is causing the most problems? the guy I bought the car from told me the battery was a refurb but I haven't noticed any problems cranking etc.......and I read on this site that it's common practice to keep a couple Main relays in the car toolbox.

I'm about to go clear the codes now and clean the relay and see if it comes back. hopefully not, but until then, any advice you can give is appreciated.

For 1-3-2 check the voltage in the battery at rest then with the engine running to see if the alternator is charging. Check very carefully the two leads to the battery to see if they are starting to break down. This has been a problem on some Volvos of that age especially the positive lead breaking inside the connector.

2-2-3 could be an open circuit or a short circuit to earth (ground) in the circuit or in the IAC valve itself. Check the wiring very carefully and make sure the plug is fully home.

I did everything you suggested Bill and everything looks in order. I played with the relay a bit inside the car and the service light went out. I cleared the codes, took it for a spin and everything is ok now?
weird. :?

Now, the service light will come on and go off after the car is in drive for a mile or so. I followed the procedure for clearing the codes but it won't do it. any ideas :?:

By "service light" do you mean the third light from the left of the panel which indicates that a service is due or the first from the left which is actually the malfunction light indicating codes are set?

If it is the malfunction light and you have tried to clear the codes using the OBD unit I would suggest that you disconnect the battery for about two hours. This usually does the trick.

it's the 3rd one.. it's the one that says "Service"... it comes on, and goes away after about a mile or so. never did that before I checked the codes. the check engine light is out complletely
