99 s70 transmission

Post by powertrip56 »

Hello, I am having issues with my Volvo. To start, I have a 1999 S70 base model. Recently the transmission has been acting weird. Whats going on is it seems like I'm driving at really high rpm, for the speeds I'm going, only in 4th gear. The transmission shifts hard sometimes, other times it shifts smooth. The fluid is dark pink.

Any ideas on this issue? I'm getting no flashing arrow, no light on the dash at all. I thought it could be overdrive or something. Driving down the highway at 70mph being at 3000 rpm sucks, especially with the exhaust leak that I have.

Does the up arrow light ever come on at all, when you have the key in position II but the car is not started?

The Volvo automatic transmissions are very good at throwing error codes at even the slightest hint of a transmission problem. It might be worthwhile to run the car by a transmission shop and have the codes read. Don't even dream of leaving the car with them and I'm sure they will say the transmission needs to be rebuilt but if you can get the code numbers we can help you decipher the codes and figurer out what the problem is.

yeah theres no lights or anything going off on the dash. it seems to be shifting a little hard, but fine. and i guess the torque converter seeems to be locking in, lowering the rpms while im driving, but i still drive at really high RPM's in 4th gear.

The engine speed of 3000 RPM at 70 MPH may actually be about right. I will take a look next time I am on the highway. I know even with my manual I really want to grab another gear when I am on the highway in 5th.

About 2,300 at 60mph in a non turbo 850 (the 850 should be the same final drive, unless turbo which has a taller final drive)

So your revs appear fine. If the fluid is dark pink on the dipstick I can bet it's black when drained into a bottle. If there is slipping a drain and fill with quality Dex III fluid usually does the trick. When driving you should be able to watch the tacho needle drop a total of 3 times which proves it's in 4th. Is this the case?

I agree, seems good. my 850 2500rpm at 65mph. 2800 at 70mph. my tranny at this point has had 8-9 drain and fills
