Oil leaking while engine is not running

Post by plyons140 »

Hey Volvo Fans,
I am new to Matts Volvo site, and my 1992 240. Well I am stumped as to why the car leaks oil while it is not running. It appears to be coming from near the crankcase. I do not know if this has something to do with the PCV system, but it wouldnt surprise me at all. The car has not been driven in years. Anyone have any guesses? Thanks!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

In a car that has been standing for some years you can expect trouble from gaskets deteriorating and rubber pipes breaking down.

Now that it has been revived you can expect oil leaks from virtually any gasket. Oil will have been circulated throughout the system and if there is a place to leak it will find it.

Start at the top and work down because it does not always leak from the point where you first see it. Check the seal in the filler cap. Look for oil traces around the rocker cover. Do a very careful inspection around the cylinder head gasket. Check the PCV items changing the flame trap if it is badly bunged up. Check the hoses on the PCV as they do develop splits from time to time.
