Modifying the Wastegate actuator rod...

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Re: Modifying the Wastegate actuator rod...

Post by LamboSE5 »

where can I get a new wastegate actuator for a '98 S70 Turbo anyway. I see some on ebay - but not specifically for volvo/my model/turbo...

anybody know what all the correct numbers and settings are for stock setup? boost psi's actuator should begin to open, be fully open, what's stock boost so I can have something to referance back to?

edit: what wastegate specifications am I looking for? eg: "0.8 bar" or "1.1 bar", "14 PSI"... are these numbers for the max you're turbo will produce?

So far my only plans are an IPD HD TCV or a manual boost control. But definitely thinking new wastegate actuator rod first.

Thanks

the 4.4 Motronics (94-98) can handle up to 3+ turns but you don't want to do that. You will actually get too much boost almost off the lnie andin bad weather can be a bit scary.
I would say your 2 turns is ENOUGH
The ME-7 cars usually take less, up to one turn, sometimes only a 1/2 turn.
Without a boost gausg and the "correct" method, it's a guess. Do a 1/2 turn at a time, especially after the first turn. You will be able to tell the difference.
If you go too far, your mileage will really suffer plus you really won't enjoy more benefits from over tightening.
Im me with any questions, I suppose I've done more of these than anyone with all kinds of Volvo turbos
Just got back from a test drive having implemented The JRL spec two turns on my manual R. Hot damn. It's like she's been woken up. Downhill on ramp in the dry - breaks traction if floored in second and spins all the way into third and then some. Holds boost all the way to redline, when I suddenly become are of being way over the speed limit. Wicked. Thanks kids.

I checked my car with a gauge and it required 6 turns to get the closed wastegate and actuator to line up at 5psi (I believe stock is just under 5). I started with two turns, which didn't really do anything. I have been running 5 1/2 turns for a while now and it is running really well. I guess it was just out of alignment from factory or from age.

I also tested the actuator on my parts car, and it was way off too. I would suggest buying a pressure gauge from ebay (they are so cheap anyway), instead of the turn and hope for the best method.

This was my last resort but after replacing all the vacuum lines, the car still felt sluggish in the mid range despite having perfect compression. I'm the cautious type so I only did 1/2 a turn and it made a big difference. I think this is how the car was meant to be because with age maybe the tcv gets lazy. Mid range is great, put your foot into it and the boost is right there, no lag. Low end is the same. Or the factory didn't adjust it properly. You can only go in 1/2 turn increments. I wouldn't go past 1 turn.
I did this on my S70 T5. I would not recommend it for a LPT, they already spool fast enough.

Once I get my gauge installed, I'll post some boost numbers.

One tip: use a vice grips to hold the rod when you loosen the nut, both moved for me. Does rotating the rod cause damage? I rotated back, I would imagine that's fine.
