Just FYI, a 97 R can use a lot of different ECU's without any problems.
Any 96 or 97 ECU from a T5 with the same emissions setup, will work. So for a 97 any turbo that (1) is not a GLT and (2) matches up presence/absence of the air pump. Or for a 96 you want to check the air pump again and ensure it is from a no-EGR as some 96 models had EGR. That's it. In fact if you want to you can solve the air pump issue VERY easily too, search for the SAS delete modification. That opens up a bunch more ECUs.
The R ECU has 20 extra hp up in the high RPM range, but it is almost impossible to notice that difference. Otherwise, the R and T5 ECUs are the same. And there are a lot of T5 ECUs out there, shouldn't cost too much.
Good luck!
