Who has done the evaporator replacement or paid a shop

Who has done it? How long did it take you? Parts you bought? Stuff you didn't buy but should have?

I've done smaller and larger stuff but this one intimidates me. I have about 2 weeks off but need to order the parts to get here so I can start on it.

If you paid a shop how much did it cost?

Don't stress. If you can replace an engine and be thorough enough to write a great write-up you should be fine.....though they do say that those who are great at giving direction are often poor at following them

If you have the release tools for the spring loaded couplers, some factory o ring seals and a new receiver drier (and o ring seals) you will be well prepared. Go through the write-up prior to commencement as it's very thorough.

I did my evaporator replacement in 2 days because I was waiting for some glue repairs on the console to dry.

First timer, expect a weekend
Flat rate is 11 hours
Most of the great Volvo techs can do it in about 5-6 hours non stop but slowly and carefully is the word for someone doing this for the first time, it's very easy to break some plastic bits and pieces especially the dashboard clips.

If it's original, it's always recommended to also replace the heater core now while it's out in the open and easily accessible

I think this is a whole weekend job. For a job this extensive, I'd stick with Volvo OEM part.
It is of note that the lack of cabin filter in earlier year models contributed to this mess.

You should replace the Receiver/drier too.

Interestingly my NA 2000 V70 evaporator failed with a large hole (though it does have higher mileage 278,000kms) and the wife's 850 which is 5 years older is still going strong on its first regas 18 months ago and with no cabin filter (lower mileage at only 138,000 kms)

I wonder if the 2000 models were short changed with cheaper evaporators. While a cabin filter prevents ingress of leaves and foreign particles which can settle and cause corrosion, I wonder if it traps humidity in the HVAC system when clogged and actually speeds the external corrosion of the evaporator. The holed one I pulled out this year was pretty clean except for where the dye had seeped through the hole. Just some thoughts.....

I used that for the o-rings on my '99. It worked perfectly, and even included an o-ring for the orifice tube and junction. One year later, no leaks and works great. This is much easier and cheaper than having to hunt through the dealer catalogs to find each individual o-ring.

I haven't read through the EVAP tutorial in a while, not sure if this is in there: While you have the system drained, replace the orifice tube. It is almost surely gunked up by now.
