1999 V70XC transmission sound. PNP?

Post by RockVegas »

Ok, so another guys with tranny problems. (not that kind of tranny)

My wife was driving her car (250k) and she said the orange shift light came on. I figured it was in limp mode, told her to come home.

I noticed it was *slightly* low on fluid, topped if off, rowed the shifter to try and clean the PNP, didnt work. Seemed to drive ok though, oddly enough.

She was driving it home from work that same day and she said the RPMs were fluctuating at idle, rough running, then towards the end of getting where she had to go she had it at 4k RPMs and it was barely moving.

I took the PNP out, cleaned it inside, roughed up the brass, lubed it, reinstalled it, reverse lights work, everything seems fine. I get a quarter mile through the neighborhood (while running totally fine) and then the same symptoms start up.

One odd symptom is I'm getting a rather loud vibration sound, almost an electrical hum out of the area exactly where the PNP switch is. Very odd because there's just not much inside it that can make a noise like that. But, something is making it and it's coming from it or something right at it. Also, the positive lead on the battery is getting abnormally hot. Is the PNP failing, electronically, and taxing that positive lead somehow?

I plan on replacing it with a junkyard unit, just to rule it out. Any other things I should look at? Cleaning the tranny screen?

You have other issues
It sounds as if you need an ETM (throttle body)

Would that trip the Limp Mode light? Also, would that cause the buzzing sound?

I forgot to mention, I also got a CEL that said something about the torque converter, but I mistakenly cleared it.

Do you think there's a possibility the noise is coming from the alternator, which is maybe why the positive lead on the battery is very hot?

If the Electronic Throtte Module or ETM goes bad, you can get all kinds of codes thrown that aren't indicative of part failures. During my radiator saga, I neglected to reattach the intercooler top hose on my high pressure turbo T5 correctly. I had 6 fault codes reporting at one at one point and a mechanic hot to replace the ETM. Once I got the engine breathing correctly, I fell down to a single throttle temp sensor code, when I pulled out the sensor I coud see the broken wire.
