Greetings!
So one night, I start the car and I see the "Brake Failure, stop engine" message, along with the STC and ABS lights. I stopped, turned the car off, turned it on again, and it worked fine.
A few weeks later, I am driving along and I get the same message. Like last time, I stop, turn it off, and try to turn it on again; this time, however, the engine has a hard time starting....I hear the engine turning, but it doesnt actually start and, when it does start, it's only for a few seconds before it looses power and dies.
I also see "Service Transmission soon", 'SRS Airbag Failure', none of the gauges work (speed, rpm, temperature), the dash does light up (but the brightness of the lights dims when the engine tries to start).
I read some other threads and it seems like it may be either an alternator or the abs module, but I'm not sure!
Could somebody please help me troubleshoot or me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Oscar.
Brake failure, service transmission, srs airbag, no guages
any scan tool will work. go to walmart or autozone if you have one close to you and get the scan tool. read the codes and post it up or you can look up the codes up online yourself. it will tell u what needs to be done.
Hey, so I got my hands on the CanOBD2 3030 with Emission Readiness reader....pretty cheap, but it gave me some codes!
I got two codes p1633 and p1632.
Today, i was able to start the car and drive a few miles...it was odd because the computer didn't give me the "Brake Failure" message, but the SRS and transmission messages were up. Also, all the dash components and the shift selector work!
This is very weird...I'm beginning to think that the problem might actually be the car's computer, not the systems actually failing
My scantool reports "freezeframe" when I select the p1633 code; I'm not sure what this means. Also the following emissions icons are missing: HC, 2A, AC, and E (this only happens when the engine is running or when in position 2.....but I don't think this is relevant to the current problem)
Any Ideas??

sorry for the late reply. p1633 is most likely a speed sensor code coming from a bad ABS module. you might want to take a close look at the ABS module, might need rebuilding. you might want to post this thread on volvoforums. you have a better chance of receiving replies. is your car still not starting? A problem with the ABS shouldnt stop a car from starting. you might to check for your fuel pump relay. check for fuel pressure. pressure should be 39-40 psi on a warm engine. check for pressure and get back to me asap

Freeze frame is stored paramaters from when the code was thrown. RPM, load, coolant temp etc etc.
In these crazy CANBUS cars it is possible that a faulty ABS module can cause a no start issue, but slimflex2 is right in that you should start with the basics where stating issues are concerned.
Sometimes the ABS controller goes south and basically dumps garbage data on the CANBUS network. Then all kinds of weird things can happen. Im not 100% sure thats whats happening here, but you could disconnect the ABS controller to isolate it while you troubleshoot other variables. Naturally you will loose ABS as well as STC if you do this.

Hey, thanks for the replies!
I haven't gotten around to checking the fuel pressure, but I will in the coming days!
I discovered that when I released the pressure of the fuel rail, the engine turns but doesn't start. Then, when I unplug and replug the battery, the car starts fine.
Now, instead of the "Brake failure" message always on, I only get Service transmission and Service SRS messages, along with engine light...
Any ideas what's doing on here?

Before you start changing parts and throwing money at it. Get it checked out by an independant shop or dealer. The codes are most likely communications related and have nothing to do with the function of the parts, in general.
I've been battling this for a long time now and know it's electrical in nature but do not know where else to look. This is after a new ABS module, ETM from Xemodex and going over the entire electrical system with a fine toothed comb, so to speak. The dealer suggested replacing my CEM (under the knee bolster of driver side) to the tune of 1200 CAD. With no garantees of it working, I passed. Right now, everytime it comes up, goto the back and disconnect the neg cable for 10 secs and restart. I now have a quick disconnect that makes it rather simple to do.
If anybody has any further idea, I'd like to know about it too. Cheers.

Bad advice as far as using/buying just ANY scantool for a canbus Volvo. For SRS clearing or reading you need a Autel EU-702 or get a Vida/Dice setup to REALLY drill down on problems. When reconnecting the battery are you first discharging the electrical system by pressing the brake pedal then putting key in POS II before reconnecting the battery?
