Throttle body cleaning issues EPIC Volvo saga...RESOLVED!!

Post by sergio »

I am now stock with an constantly oscillation (700-1200 RPM) engine. Pushing the gas pedal doesn't change anything.
I guess the throttle body must be cleaned.
Now I have read, and seen videos, about dismounting the throttle body. It seems a harder job then repairing a Piaget watch!!!
I saw a video with Goss of Motorweek where he suggests this could be done without the throttle being dismounted. You only to have an assistant who would depress the accelerator thus opening the butterfly and you spraying the cleaner in?!

Do I really need to take the throttle body out?
Would spaying the cleaner in while the throttle body is still on the engine harm anything?

You may or may not have a TB cleaning issue but you should remove it
Spraying anything into it being lying on its side is not good at all
Remove it
Clean by spraying the rag then CAREFULLY cleaning the TB
Repeat as many times as necessary

Thanks, but what else can it be. Everything I read leads to TB problem.
Since few months, from time to time I would start the car, it would go on in this oscillation mode. Then, after couple of minutes I would stop the engine and restart. The second time, it would go on as it should.
3 days ago it stopped completely. Tonight I tried again, and voila! it started normally!

If cleaning it outside of the engine does not help your intermittent problem, then a failing ETM is the most likely cause. ETM failures common in '99-02 volvos with the Magnetti Marrelli ETM.

Do a search about Magnetti Marelli ETM failures and find plenty to read for a whole afternnon.

Most turbo 02's do not have the M/M ETM unless yours falls into one of the VERY early builds
Obviously you need to find out which one you have
If it's the old (99-01 and a few 02s) ETMs then yes, it's quite possible.
If so, then it would be time to contact XeMODeX

I must have a Bosch. Part # ist 8677866. Googled it for pictures and they look like mine!

Tomorrow morning I will get the gasket and will start dismantling the engine.
While I am there, I might clean the PCV as well.
I don't know how much trouble I'm getting myself in.
Sometimes I wish I had kept my 68 Mini Moke I bought brand new in April of 1968!
Boy, it was sooooo easy to repair

Any advice /guidance will be much much appreciated.

As with the Magnetti Marelli throttle bodies, the Bosch units also require a perfect MAF . The Bosch number is 0280 218 088. Removing the Bosch unit is as awkward as with the Magnetti unit though if you fully remove the aircleaner box and lower your head right down low into the engine bay seeing the retaining bolts is far easier.

Thanks. As a matter of fact I am going to clean both PCV and TB. So the first thing will be to remove the manifold. I suppose and hope that from here on access to both of PCV and TB would be easy.

Fairly easy after intake removal
Just make sure everything is either new or cleaned out properly
All the parts are pretty cheap except the large tube.
There's a trick to reusing that part but I can't explain it properly here

Ok, 11 (ELEVEN) hours later (spread in 2 days) of hard work with back pain, muscle spasm etc, here I am very tired and disappointed.

I don't understand why you have to remove the thermostat AND then use a "thin" extension to loosen the bottom left bolt to free the manifold. To find a way to do this took more than an hour. And to top that there is a small hose going from PCV to a collection of 2 larger hoses connected to the thermostat. I broke it when handling the manifold, it was totally clogged anyways I replaced it.
I cleaned the throttle body so well that it could be sold as a new
Also cleaned the PCV replaced the small hose with a new.
When reassembling, I could not screw back the thermostat. I was contemplating too remove the power steering pump.

The worst. When all was finished. Ignition on the engine began oscillating between 700 and 1200. As before.
Very disappointed. Still don't know what to do.
