Hello,

I've got a 1996 850 GLT Wagon. Until recently I had something like six "not ready" (egr, cat, o2s, 2air, ho2s, one other I can't remember) readings on my OBD2 scanner and a P0410 error (secondary air system intake problem). The P0410 is usually indicative of a bad SAS valve, relay or air pump. I replaced the SAS valve and now I'm down to "not ready" status only on o2s, cat and egr. Today the engine light came on again due to the P0410 code. The funny thing is that I hear the pump running at cold start for about the first minute or so. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance for any help!

Regards,
Jorg

I start to give the follow info:

Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR)
The pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) reduces the emission of hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon dioxide (CO), and heats the catalytic converter more rapidly after cold starting. When the engine is started from cold the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) introduces fresh air (oxygen) into the exhaust manifold in order to promote afterburning (oxidation) of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. This makes it possible to increase injection period and retard ignition, increasing exhaust temperature and activating the catalytic converter more quickly

Image

The system consists of:
pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump (1) activated via pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) relay (2). The pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump takes fresh air directly from the air cleaner housing to avoid introducing dirt and water into the system.
pulsed secondary air injection valve (3) with its built-in check valve prevents exhaust gases being forced into the pulsed secondary air injection (PAIR) pump.
A solenoid (4) which controls the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve using the negative pressure in the intake manifold.
A check valve (5) to maintain maximum negative pressure.

Motronic 4.4 controls the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump valve and solenoid for the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) using separate outputs from the engine control module (ECM). The pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) is activated 20 seconds after the engine is started if engine temperature is between -12

If you hear the pump running and the SAS valve is new, I would look at the vacuum control to the SAS valve (the small purple hose into the SAS valve). The vacuum feed comes off a hose plugged into a vacuum tree on the intake manifold and goes to the vacuum control solenoid (item 4 in the diagram). The ECM picks the solenoid and vacuum is applied to the SAS valve, opening it up. Get a vacuum guage and start measuring vacuum at different points. You should read about 20 inches of vacuum at the intake manifold and about the same at the SAS valve when the solenoid is activated.

Sorry to revive such an old thread.

This diagram and explanation is priceless. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what that solenoid was doing on the airbox. Searches reveal many other people were/are also confused about it.

My question: There is a little trim knob on the side of the solenoid. (you can even see it on the diagram for part #4). What does this control, and how should it be adjusted?

Thanks! Tom
