I have a 2001 volvo S80 2.9L non-turbo and it just started making a loud screeching noise yesterday morning. Ive checked the timing belt and its not that it sounds like its coming from the exhaust from the engine (like where the 2 tubes branch off the back of the engine and go into the catalytic converter).
Ive been looking all under my car and thats where the sound seems like its coming from. If you go to the passenger side front tire you can hear it better then you could on the driver side. Could someone please help or at least give me some ideas on what it could be? Also theres a strong gas smell coming from it.
Ps. when i started having the problems it happend on the interstate and i couldnt excelerate over 65 i was just revving up my RPMs up to 6k a little more i think. so i just slowed down and let the RPM go back down. and i wasnt able to get it back up to 65 i pulled over and then tried to get back on the road and couldnt get it past 20.
2001 s80 making screeching noises cant figure out what!!!

i have figured out after doing some research that if i can take the oil cap off and the noise stops that could mean its my PCV valve or my oil trap. I have no idea where either is on the car. could someone post a site or a diagram showing where these are located?

The PCV system consists of an intricate set of hoses mostly underneath the inlet manifold with a PCV bottle also directly under the manifold. FCP Euro sell the entire system for your car. They have a current video tutorial for the 850 series which isn't too different from your setup.
Maintenance of this item is crucial for Volvos to ensure a leak-free engine bay. Excess pressure in the PCV system will eventually cause seals to fail with the rear main being the most costly/time consuming one to access.

yeah ive spent about 2-3 hours maybe taking off my serp belt and taking out the alternator and ac unit and power steering to get to my oil trap to remove it and put it in some degreaser. I hope this makes it stop screeching and fixes the problem. im going to look at my hoses too and make sure there not clogged up as well.

Curious if any resolution was found after cleaning out the parts, and inspecting the PCV system? Interesting post, but there was no update or follow up.
Careful to all those who dig under the Intake manifold, because old lines can get brittle, and all the bolts and clamps are either upside down or tricky to get to. I broke one little piece, and the whole PCV system kit is $300 plus.

He only posted two days ago, give him some breathing space
As far as your broken piece, try making it out of copper tubing or aluminium tubing by buying pipe benders etc to get the job done. That's an expensive PCV. Is it a T6?

yeah sorry i've been busy this week. i still haven't fixed it yet. I've been told it could be the cat converter and im gonna take that off tomorrow and see whats up with that. I also pulled a code off P0102 "Mass or volume air flow circuit low input" Which i was thinking mass airflow sensor. I had replaced that last summer and when it was going out i couldn't let the car sit and idle i would have to keep the RPM up or it would just shut off. When i cleaned the Oil Trap it was a pretty simple process it was just time consuming. sadly it didnt fix my problem. If anyone has any advice that could help please let me know soon ill be working on it tomorrow sometime.

Was it a genuine dealer or Bosch MAF that was used or one of the generic ones?
