Planning to replace the engine--what are the odds?

Post by Alamoswede »

Last November the engine "blew" in my '96 850 Turbo. We'd had it a couple of years--bought it in Houston with an odometer frozen at 86k, and enjoyed the heck out of it. Kept its carcass in the driveway until we found enough money to work on it (which happened last month when hubby totalled his '98 Buick--last Friday we finally got the insurance $$)

Our neighborhood mechanic said our Volvo's engine was beyond repair and we needed a new engine (not work he cares to do anymore). Today a local Volvo-groupie mechanic looked into the old engine and said the same thing.

It looks like we can purchase a rebuilt engine with a 3-year guarantee for about $1300. Installation by the Volvo-groupie will be $800, (and all that just about equals the insurance proceeds from the Buick.)

A used car salesman friend says that a new engine won't be the end of it--we'll need a new radiator and new transmission forthwith. Is that true? What we need is the Volvo to run again--what are the odds?

Why did the old engine blow in the first place? Overheated?

I don't know why you'd need a new transmission unless antifreeze and ATF mixed. Otherwise, no idea what the heck he's talking about.
