About to add another Volvo to the family

Post by PEWPEW »

Well I managed to convince my housemate to buy a Volvo while his Range Rover is being made roadworthy.
I was searching around for another one for myself, he came in saying "I've found one!" So he bought himself a 1997 V70 SE T Estate for $500. Closest I could find was $1500.
That is quite unheard of in Australia. Though it does have some flaws.

Since it hasn't been picked up yet nor have I heard it running due to a flat battery, I'm not totally sure of the entire condition. The previous owner has said it has a misfire and the turbo "doesn't work"

These things aside the body is excellent as to the interior. The suspension needs some work and it also needs registration.

So some work to be done. Considering they still sell for $4-5000 in a working state it sure seems like a bargain!

If the body and the interior are in good nick, the rest is relatively easy to fix! Good buy. Be sure to post some pics. I am off to buy an 850R tomorrow if it passes my inspection. Volvo #4 in my car history!

Just had it delivered today. Will go over it during the week,
It starts and drive with a large misfire and blow exhaust.
Still a good buy.

I would start with the basics on this one, get the exhaust patched up as that won't be helping it run correctly then swap out the plugs and check the condition of the HT leads, dissy cap and rotorarm, replace if required. If the dissy cap is full of oil then the cam seal will need changing. Air filter then idle air valve clean out with carb cleaner before looking in to deeper faults. Looks like it is the same colour as mine Moondust Metalic? - Mike

yeah a full stage 0 is planned. Just going about seeing what needs to be repaired as the previous owner took to door panels with a flat head screwdriver.
Need a new radiator for sure. Cleaned up quite nicely.
The color is Arctic White. May even sell the 850 after transferring all the goodies the the V70

So far the faults I've found:
Misfire - faulty coil.
Oil in coolant - faulty radiator.
Hole in exhaust.
Gas lifts.
Window master switch.

So not too bad so far.

Well found the oil cooler had a hole in it letting oil into the coolant. Replaced faulty coil packs. Next is plugs and exhaust fix.

Just replaced the thermostat on the 850, it was not in a good way.

It's been a while so here's an update for my volvo family:
The V70 has had a whole bunch of things replaced, the biggest problem is the TPS. It's completely stuffed. On the plus side just registered with Volvo to become certified in repairs.
The 850 had all the engine mounts done on the weekend, damned pattern parts needed modding. In the end all three had totally sheared in half and the rubber had shrunk, so the engine had dropped a cm or so putting strain on the CV joints. A compression test showed one cylinder was low, not really low though. A decent upper cylinder head clean should bring it back. I'm going to tackle the rear delta links next weekend as one side has debonded. Also found the sump has a hairline crack, thanks to Australian roads, a bit of metal weld epoxy will fix that till I get another sump. Good thing I haven't towed heavy stuff, pretty sure I would put the engine through the radiator :P
On another note I'm thinking about buying an 850 AWDt manual estate just for fun.

Hello, hello!
Well damn and blast! A compression test was done with one cylinder showing 90 Psi with the rest hovering around 140 Psi. After a thorough clean I'm no closer to an increase in cylinder compression. Fortunately I happened upon a 10v engine and gearbox from Japan with 52,000Km for $500 and with that I'll just change bloody engines. I'm still so impressed with the 350,000km this engine has done and most towing something. Along with all new suspension and brakes should feel like a new car! Which is good as I have to do some traveling later, 4 trip @ 1400 Km a trip and bring my fuel consumption down to normal from 17L/100km. I can also finally replace the gutted catalytic convertor for a high flow.
Well, wish me luck dragging an engine crane over broken concrete and soft grass.

I lived in Japan for 4 years. Whatever mileage that motor has on it, consider it x4 due to their extreme city driving conditions.
