94 850 Turbo Wagon - 443 code

Post by zero324 »

Recently I started getting a 443 and 231 code along with a CEL. After the 443 code I would also no longer get any boost. Once I clear the codes I would have boost for a short period but it would be sporadic and then no boost at all. It happened twice that the 443 and 231 codes would pop up with a CEL. The last time I cleared it which was 2 weeks ago I had boost for a few days and then it went away but no CEL this time. Yesterday I checked and I only have a 443 code. I noticed that after I cleared the code and restarted the car it would idle rough for about 2-3 seconds and then even out.

One thing I'm about to do is change out the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. The reason i'm changing it is because when it's colder than 40 outside the car would never go to full normal temp no matter how long it ran for. Once it got to 45-50 outside it would go to normal. I was wondering if that could be causing the issue's that i've been having? I greatly appreciate any help and advice you may have.

You are talking about DTC codes, right? The code 2-3-1 is a fuel trim code and code 4-4-3 is a catalytic converter efficiency code.

Neither of those codes should cause your running symptoms.

The 2-3-1 can be either an upper or lower limit code. IAC valve problems or vacuum leaks would cause that code.

The 4-4-3 can be as a result of the 2-3-1 code so fix the former first.

Is there a way to test the IAC valve? I'll double check for vacuum leaks but pretty sure that I replaced all my vacuum lines with silicone ones when I replaced my vacuum tree and o-ring a couple of months ago.

What could be causing my turbo boost issue?

The IAC valve should rattle after you remove it, if it doesn't rattle it is likely gummed up. Once it is off it is a good idea to clean it anyway.

There are a myriad of things that could cause the turbo to not boost. Try to borrow, most of the auto parts stores will "rent" you one for free with a deposit, or just buy an OBD-II scanner and pull the codes that way.

Normally the DTC codes are more accurate but there are a few things that the OBD-II will pick up that the DTC codes won't.
