CV joint replacment questions

Post by jacobharding »

My cv joints on my 96 have started clicking within the last 2 months and have progressivly gotten very loud and noticeable on every turn. I am just wondering from others experience how long I have before they totally fail? I know I should go ahead and do it ASAP but due to time and money constraints I am not really able too.
Also wondering how they compare in difficulty to replacing rear wheel drive universal joints as I have done many of those but this will be my first front wheel drive job.
Also what is the best brand to go with.
Thanks!
I am not an expert mechanic, but I will attempt any repair. Worst case scenario is I screw it up worse than it was.

Replacing the CVs yourself isn't much of an option - time for a new or (preferably) rebuilt axle. Best brand to go with is to send them to Marty at www.raxles.com for a rebuild. If the clicking is very loud it is time.

If I was in your shoes, and if your signature is still accurate, I would pull the axles from one of your parked vehicles and use them to run the turbo while you send the 96 axles to Marty for a rebuild.

You can get new axles for much cheaper, but there have been dozens of debacles with these cheap axles. Roll the dice with those Chinese products or pony up and pay for top quality from raxles.

It's not hard to do, I rebuilt a couple in my parking lot on Christmas eve. Took a little while but I did it.

The hardest part is getting the bolt loose from the axle. Then you'll want to tighten it back down properly. It can be done in 1 hour. You can pull one from a car in the salvage yard for $22. Pull the one with the newest looking boots.

I bought my 2 axles from Autozone. Thier Duralast brand. You have to give them yours in exchange so they can be rebuilt. They charged about $50 a side.

Cheap axles: lots of hits, lots of misses. Throw the dice.

If an axle breaks while driving is it likely other damage can be done? (aside from damage caused by loss of control)
