Radiator Replacement Questions 99 V70

Post by agoia »

So with warm weather here, the typical volvo radiator seam seep turned into a scary gush and I've ordered a new Nissens Radiator for it, but in looking at all of the guides some questions came up before I tackle this...

1. In replacing the upper lower hoses, how many/ what size clamps should I order to go with them?

2. How many/ what size O-rings are recommended so I can get them ahead of time?

I should know this after a couple hours of research but the online shops seem sketchy about what goes where and what is exactly needed for the job

3. It seems that there is a transmission cooling line into the radiator, will I need to have some Mobil 1 ATF on hand to top off the system after the new radiator is installed (I want to do a flush soon, but baby steps for now, that will be another weekend/ paycheck)

Hopefully that's all the questions for now, but much more research is called for before the rad gets here so more may pop up, and I REALLY REALLY want to be prepared so I don't have to come back asking more while the volvo is on blocks in the field halfway done.

I wrote this radiator replacement guide for my '97 855 (see the pdf file linked in the forum post below). I haven't looked into or worked on a '99 but the write-up may contain something of use to you:

That' a really nice write up with great pictures! Thanks for sharing it dude I'm sure it will help. They didnt really change that much from the 850 series, it seems, and besides the lack of intercooler on mine it should be pretty close, also props for doin that in the rain.

Agoia-- Thanks for the feedback. You are the first one to have commented on the raindrops in the photos. It wasn't part of the plan obviously. :D I couldn't quite finish up the job on the first day and it started raining pretty hard on the second day. I only had a few more pieces to reinstall and reconnect, so I went for it. I had a large umbrella that I positioned over the engine compartment to keep most of the water out. When I started the car up to test my work for coolant and oil leaks, the engine miss-fired and ran rough for the first few minutes, which I think was due to raindrops that had splashed onto the high tension lead from the ignition coil to the distributor. After a while it warmed up and the engine ran smoothly. No leaks. All was well in the end.
