The 2002 V70xc that I recently acquired has started the dreaded clunking into gear and flaring from 2nd to 3rd.
Can someone tell me what that means it is going to do. Will it just do that forever? Will it gradually get worse? Will it catastrophically fail while at speed?
I am planning to do the drain and fill and possibly the B4 replacement. But until I do that or don't do it at all, what can I expect?

Mick, you will be in better position to judge the next steps after you've done the drain and fill which allow you to assess the fluid condition. I strongly suggest you do the B4 servo cover replacement at the same time since you will be in the vicinity.
Post your result after the drain and fill and we can go from there.

2003 XC70 230K and counting..,
I am in a position right now to decide if I want to continue with the next steps. I bought the car as something of a "pig in a poke". The owner had lost the keys and it had front fender damage and they didn't want to mess with fixing it and getting a key. So I got the car for almost nothing. I repaired the damage and got keys made. I have $1300 in it so far including what I paid for it. I haven't even gotten the car registered in my name yet. I have just driven it around the neighborhood so far. The registration, taxes and inspection is going to set me back another $400. It is a beautiful car, smooth and quiet running engine and everything else works.
I might get my money back out of it if I dump it now. Or I could drive it until it fails. Of keep putting money in it hoping it will be OK.
So what are my odds that it will get better, or at least work for a two or three years?

Do the B4 servo cover replacement. It's around $30 and not that hard to do. If it doesn't help, at least you're only out $30. The 2-3 shift flare is a symptom of the B4 cover problem. Do the drain and fill. It will cost more than the servo cover, but it is the next least expensive step. I guess I've just repeated what Tonyx has posted. If you are interested in fixing this, these would be the first two steps. If these do not help, you'll need to take a step back and decide if you want to spend significant money on repairs that may be too late.

Also, see if the car still has the stop-neutral "feature." After being completely stopped with your foot on the brake on level ground for a few seconds, take your foot off the brake without giving the car any gas. If there is a slight delay before the car engages and starts to move forward, the feature is still present. If it is there, you will need to have the dealer install the software update. The stop-neutral feature is very hard on the transmission and is part of the problem with this year of V70s.

The other thing you look at/consider is the tires.
I have 3 XC70's, two '02's and one '04.
The '04 was an other-side-of-the-country eBay buy and one of the '02's was a local dealer who thought too much was wrong with it.
In those two cases, tranny slamming went away with new tires. These things are really sensitive to tire height. Get four (new) matching tires and keep them rotated.
We've put 65K miles on the '04 since then, and the only time er still get hard shifts is when the tranny oil gets hot, such as when we're doign around town on hot day. Have to come to a full stop or else we'll get a hard shift when it's coasting and then clunks into gear.
The '02 was just miraculously fixed with (high quality) new tires. No more clunking, slamming, etc.

So I take it that the odds are pretty good that I can get my money's worth out of it over the next few years to make it worth the effort rather than dumping now and licking my wounds.
I noticed someone selling Volvo 1161540 on Ebay right now for $3.95 a litre. Hopefully it is the real thing and not a scam. Has anyone noticed it or gotten any of it from him? item #151041009601

Apparently I do not have the stop neutral feature. On level ground I come to a stop sit with my foot on the brake for a few seconds. The instant I release the brakes the car creeps forward. That's good ......right?
I noticed that the flare from second to third happens even when manually shifting, not just in drive. I guess I will get the B4 cover. I ordered some Volvo 1161540. I got a dozen one litre bottles for $60 including shipping. The local Toyota dealer wants $6.59 inc. tax per quart.
