Help!
I have an S90 1998 Volvo that I have had for about 7 months. Have never had this problem... When I went to crank my car, it would not crank and in addition the horn started beeping and my flashers started flashing. I just returned from having my battery checked and was told it was a good battery. I don't see anything in my owners manual that addresses this issue. I do not have a remote for locking/unlocking car.
Any suggestions??
Thank you!!!
Car won't crank - horn beeping, flasher lights flashing
Could be the signs your PNP switch is going bad, not uncommon. It is a switch mounted on the exhaust side of the transmission that tells the computer what gear you have selected. With age and it closeness to the down exhaust pipe, the grease within gets cooked and the delicate small springs in the switch get gunked up. When this happens the car is not sensing that it is in park. Another thing to look for is sometimes the reverse lights won't go on either.
As a short term fix, with the key in the key in the ignition, engine on but not running, foot firmly on brake pedal, row the gear selector back and forth, thru the whole range of gears, do this 15 to 20 times. Try starting it now.
This will work in the short term but eventually the it needs to be replaced.
