Belt chirp from 1st to 2nd gear, 850 turbo

Post by lk250f »

on my 97 850 GLT, I noticed that when applying the accelerator fully in 1st gear, the 1st to 2nd shift is firm, amplified due to a bad rear mount. But anyway, during the shift it sounds like a serpentine belt chirp when you first start the car with a bad serp belt. I also noticed that my belt tensioner is moving around quite much when idling and running. Looks to be a bad tensioner. Also a whining when cold points to the tensioner. But not sure why the shift would do this unless the movement of the engine during the shift makes the tensioner lose tension.. Anyone ever hear of this issue?

yes its possible, but the tensioner moving at idle usually indicates something is locking up, correct me if im wrong? by locking up i mean a bearing in the idler pulley or the alternator is going bad. take the belt off an look for grease around the idler pulley and hand turn all moving parts to see if anything snags or seems snug. replacing the belt and tensioner isnt a bad idea to begin with though, just make sure nothing is indeed locking up. how does the belt look? unevenly worn? anything other than normal wear?

I will look into that, that would make sense but a bad tensioner would also cause it. I put a new Dayco belt on, the old one wasn't showing any strange wear patterns, just cracking and old. When i get back from vacation ill take the belt off and look into the pulleys. Thank you!
Anyone have any clue about the noise during that one shift?
