"Brake Failure Stop Safey ASAP" - major electrical issue

Post by shreksbrother »

2001 S60 2.4T...
Please help! I found this site on Google, and really would appreciate some help! I was driving my car home the other day, and had what seems like a major electrical failure. The "Brake Failure Stop Safey ASAP" message popped up, followed by and SRS message, then the dash lights and gauges went blank. Now the following will not work:
Dash Lights
Instruments
Turn Signals (But hazards do work)
Power Door Locks
Sunroof
Keyless Entry
Trunk button (above license plate)
Power seat
Power mirror
That's all I can think of for now...The car starts, runs, and drives fine. The headlights/taillights work, as do the radio, climate control, 12V plug.
I've Ohm'ed out all of the blade fuses under the hood and along the side of the dash. Any ideas PLEASE?????
Thanks, Adam.

Ideas, yes. Go to a Volvo dealer.
It does sound as if you do have a major electrical problem
I've heard about this before but forgot what was found. It may not be so bad, but if you start looking by trial and error you may never find it

JRL...Definitely no trial and error going on here! Simply posted hoping to find some helpful advice from someone who's been through this problem so I can hopefully avoid the dealer. As an update, after restarting the car several times, everything started working again! I drove the car 100-150 miles running errands and such, shutting the car off several times, and everything worked fine. Then the same thing happened again while driving. After restarting a couple of times, everything is working fine except the instrument cluster lights and gauges (very inconvenient!). I saw a post about an Upper Electronic Module on another Volvo forum...Does anyone know about these? Thanks, Adam.
As a PS, I've owned this car for over 2 1/2 years, and replaced the battery and had the alternator rebuilt nearly a year ago...Everything else has been great with it!

I have the very same faults with me 2001 V70 T5 (ex-police). Does anyone know what causes this issue and how it can be sorted? Many thanks.

There's a problem on the low-speed CAN network...that's what all these devices have in common. Every module needs to be scanned for trouble codes, there's probably a CAN communication code or two stored that will provide a clue as to where to begin searching. Short answer: dealer needs to see it (or an independent garage with VIDA)

i had a relay go bad the had similar symptoms, it controlled the d1 leg of the low speed can or something, its attached to the cem/ under dash electrical box. i wish i could recall the position. you could try wiggling each relay see what happens, but the problem also included climate control problems and radio lights

I had a similar issue and it was the ignition switch, my mechanic tells me they are failing all over the place.

That '99 S80 ignition switch will fit the following: any mid' 99-00 S70 (Factory Code 1, from chassis # 598545, FC 2 from chassis # 596596), mid '99-07 V70(from chassis # 587537 on), mid' 99-04 C70 coupe (from chassis # 12005), mid '99-04 C70 convertible (from chassis # 1686), S80 mid '99-06 (from chassis# 29668 on), S60 all, XC 70 all, XC 90 all. FC or Factory Code is the digit immediately after your year digit in the cars VIN #. Start at the end of the VIN and count 7 digits in from the right.

So, long story short, if it's an ignition switch you need for a '01 V70 (any model) or any S60, the '99 S80 switch should work.
