Shrill noise when driving on slushy roads

Post by mhut »

Have a 2001 cross country - 47K miles. I hear a shrill sound - almost a screaming noise or a noise which sounds very similar to the sound which comes from a tuning fork. The sounds seems like it comes from the rear of the vehicle but I'm not certain - you can definitely hear it all over inside the car as the sound is pretty loud - can even hear it when your driving next to the XC when it is doing its thing. The sound ONLY happens when driving through slushy snow on the roads; it does not happen at all at other times; dry road, wet roads, heavy rain = no noise. Anyone else experienced such a thing? If so, what the heck is it? Volvo service shop wants to "look" at it - kind of hard to schedule a service appt around the requirement of slushy roads. Any ideas, information or advice is much appreciated!
...thanks...

Could be early signs of the front-to-rear drive shaft going south (forget what they call it on your year Volvo). If you trust your dealer I'd let them look at it. They may be able to tell even without the slushy snow. My theory is that the beginning signs are seen in that weather/road conditions but if the problem gets worse you'll see/hear it in other weather conditions too.....you know- Murphy's law.

No, no.
It's the driveshaft hitting the resonator, common on R's, first time I've heard of this in a non R
There is a fix for this but I forget the TNN, you have to reposition the resonator a bit down. See your dealer
Easy fix and Dave, you should know better, don't scare the guy!

Jim, I don't read the R forums...and if it's common on R's but you've never heard about it on XC's then how would I know? Just sounded like something that needs attention.

If you're going to be a mod, please read up on your TNN's.
This is actually an AWD, NON R TNN.
Some dealers actually won't fix it on a customers R as they think they won't get warranty reimbursement.
You should peruse the R forum as many posts there also pertain to P2 XC's

Thank you for your input. I will try to read up on such things. When you say to pursue the "R" forum, this would have to be on S.S, as I know of no other site with such a section, disregarding the "R" site itself.

In the meantime, let me clarify for you your apparent misunderstanding of what it means to be a moderator on Matthews through IM. No sense on having that discussion here.

The main thing for this thread is whether or not the original poster gains some information to begin dealing with his problem or not.

Okay, I found this, and I would think this is the fix that JRL spoke of (although not mentioned in the pdf file, the noise seems to appear in heavy rain and driving in snow):
http://www.v70xc.com/resources/how-to/p ... -noise.pdf
However, reading others' posts in S.S. and the XC forum, it appears that sometimes this doesn't take care of the issue and some people are having the smaller resonator (not the large one which is the muffler) removed completely. This will produce a somewhat louder exhaust note, but not bad at all from what others are saying.

Dear MadeInJapan and JRL - thanks for all the valuable information which WILL CERTAINLY help in going to the Volvo service advisor. I really appreciate the time, effort and especially the collective knowledge/experience you've shared with me.

...many thanks!!

Happened to me [2002 XC] yesterday as I was driving in the rain - almost jerked the car off the road. I lifted off the accelerator, lightly applied brakes and the noise disappeared by the time I was down to about 15 mph... I assume that I drove through a slippery patch that caused the AWD to engage.

God bless, did you read anything that was said?
If this is in fact the rain squeal, that has NOTHING to do with the AWD "engaging"
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
