Air Cond problem; 2005 V50 2.4L wagon
The Air Conditioner compressor on my 2005 V50 2.4L wagon cycles OFF when ambient temperatures exceed 82 degrees F. The AC system has been recharged several times with no positive impact on the problem. I've been advised that an electronic sensor is included in the AC protection network that will cut off the AC to protect the engine from overheating. To me, this suggests that the cars engine cooling system is insufficient to protect the engine with the AC system running? Can anyone provide insight to this problem.

I just fixed this issue on mine. Same year/model. The clutch is magnetic and will disengage due to the electromagnetic charge becoming weaker in the heat so it's no longer able to "engage" until the temperatures cool down. There are instructions for shimming the clutch but you'll need a tool to remove the clutch from the compressor. Do a search for A/C Clutch Shim Fix and you should find a tutorial. Where the shim technique works I was able to buy a low mileage compressor for around $120 and did the labor myself. After recharging the system, replacing the o-rings and compressor I wound up spending less than $200 to get the issue fixed. Air is ice cold now. The shim technique will work for you if you're on a budget. This issue seems to be VERY common with the S40/V50.

I would agree, it sounds like an AC clutch problem...The shim-removal as psykojezu suggests worked 100% for me.... MyS40 hit 153,000 the other week....'might have a few other issues - i.e., leaky coolant, did the alternator but couldn't find an aftermarket product w/o a long wait, so around $575 @ dealer - but now AC is not one of them... It's in the 80's/90's in central NJ this Fourth of July weekend, and I have no complaints about AC after almost 1 year...Other forums suggested the same thing, included some good visuals, showed some homemade tools to remove the pulley and shims, but I took others' advice and bought a proper pulley removal tool ( see Amazon...look for my review of an Alltrade 648995 kit for around $60)...Not too difficult....Good luck!
